Sheer utter delight
By WBarklam (36 reviews) from London , 30 Mar 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
Featuring Charles Laughton as his most entrepreneurial showiest, this is a slender showcase for Deanna Durbin - she actually only sings 3 songs- but the script and performances outshine any musical interlude.
Franchot Tone - not really used enough in the 40s ( and hardly at all in the 50s ) proves as dapper and debonair as they come as the much-put-upon playwright caught in between Laughton's ham-rich finagling and Durbin's soprano simpering, with befuddlement crossing his brow more than a few times while en route to the arms of Deanna who, while lacking the oomph power of a Garland, learns how to tease not only the players in this overlooked classic but the audience as well and please them in what could almost be termed this "screwball operetta". The sort of film you look forward to seeing again because you missed out on it for inexplicably so long!- Was this review helpful to you?

I love Laughton
By a customer from London , 02 Jul 2009I am a great fan of Charles Laughton.
LoveFilm does not have enough of him Like Les Miserables Or Tuttles of Tahiti. I like this one particularly because I think he is gently sending himself Up- Was this review helpful to you?

to pass an afternoon
By a customer from PLYMOUTH , 11 Apr 2008If you have an afternoon to pass than this is the film for you. Deanna Durban overacting as usual. Charles Laughton brilliantly keeps this film together.- Was this review helpful to you?

A real treat.
By Edgar Jephcote from Notts, UK , 19 May 2007Charles Laughton fans prepare!
This movie is so funny and delightful, I could watch it over and over again. I just can't get enough of those fed up Butler scenes that was so regular in the films of this period. Superb.- Was this review helpful to you?
