Annoying but still enjoyable
By a customer from Glasgow, Scotland , 14 Sep 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
This film is enjoyable, naturalistic, with good performances. However it totally spoils the positive message put over concerning equality of gay people with an appalling double standard. We get lingering shots of female nudity and heterosexual sex, but when it comes to gay sex it cuts quickly away as though afraid to upset the straight TV audience it was presumably aimed at. This both annoyed me and spoilt what was otherwise a pretty decent film.
A gay romance at the heart of the movie, between Vincent, star swimmer, and Benjamin, new boy at school with a shady past, takes second place to the het relationship between Vincent and No?mie. Pity.
Still, the movie is worth viewing despite its flaws.- Was this review helpful to you?

(41)Sweet film
By MartyP (7 reviews) from UK , 08 Mar 2013Sweet, simple story. Grab a bag of pop corn on a rainy Sunday when you have nothing else to do and watch this film.- Was this review helpful to you?

Mildly interesting
By PRAlchemist (33 reviews) from Ely , 12 Feb 2013Nothing to set the world on fire. OK viewing ie boy outed by others, bullied but finds love, credits. It could be so much more but then it is French. Nuff said.- Was this review helpful to you?

Nice film over a glass of wine...
By Blondoner (37 reviews) from London , 24 Nov 2012It is a nice coming out film of a 17 year old star swimmer at school. And when I say 'nice' then that's all what it is. Lovely to watch, but nothing spectacular.
The film is a tiny bit on the shallow side, as the only area where it goes a bit more into depth is with his (ex)girlfriend. Unfortunately, for a 17 year old her dialogues are a bit too grown up and unbelievable.
All the other story lines like his relationship to his best friend, brother, parents, school teachers, swimming partners, even the guy who is possibly the new boyfriend are a bit thin and should have had more flesh on the bones.
It is a good film though over a glass of wine. I'd watch it again in a few years time.
It is a French movie, hence beware you need to read it. Subtitles are in English.- Was this review helpful to you?

In French, With English Subtitles !!!
By a customer , 08 Jul 2012I made a huge mistake renting 'Because of a Boy - You'll get Over It'.....
I hadn't realised that the film was in French.
It may be a good film, but that is the reason for me only awarding it half a star.
Although there are subtitles in English, I much prefer to watch a film.....
If I wanted to read, I would buy a book !!!- Was this review helpful to you?
