Bedazzled

BEDAZZLED is a fiery romantic comedy starring Brendan Fraser as Elliot Richards, a bored and boring computer programmer who is in love with Alison Gardner (Frances O'Connor), a lovely coworker who doesn't even know he exists. In a desperate attempt to gain Alison's affections, Brendan naively strikes up a deal with the devil (Elizabeth Hurley), a seductive and wickedly naughty woman who promises Elliot seven wishes in exchange for his soul. The devil does her best to torture Elliot's poor soul, giving him all seven wishes, each of which in some way goes astray. Elliot is in for the ride of his life as the saucy devil transforms him into a Colombian drug lord, a supersensitive pushover, and an NBA star with more brawn than brains as his wishes become manipulated into one outrageous disaster after another. Fraser is an acting tour de force, deftly playing a wide variety of characters using his comic genius and flair for the absurd, while Hurley is at her stylish and seductive best as the haute couture devilish prankster. Together they ignite the screen with wit, charm, and palpable chemistry. Director Harold Ramis (CADDYSHACK, GROUNDHOG DAY) wrote and directed this hilarious remake of the 1967 movie of the same name directed by Stanley Donen that starred Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Raquel Welch, and Eleanor Bron.

Liz Hurley plays the Devil in disguise in this remake of the 1967 Dudley Moore/Peter Cook comedy. In a contemporary riff on the Faustian premise, Satan Hurley (straight off the catwalk in a plethora of red and black outfits) grants geeky Brendan Fraser seven wishes in exchange for his soul. Fraser uses these to try to attain the object of his affections, Frances O'Connor, while Hurley uses them to subvert his desires. Extremely funny in places, this is director Harold Ramis at his superficial best, providing instant gratification that you'll forget the minute you leave the cinema.

Oh how disappointing! I love the original "Bedazzled" movie starring Peter Cook and Dudley Moore and I am also a fan of Brendan Fraser so I thought I'd give this modern retelling a go.

I really liked that they decided to go with a female as the devil this time round but Elizabeth Hurley proved to be very annoying! She was blatently just put there to add sex appeal, because her acting was far from up to scratch!

Brendan Fraser & Frances O'Connor however, wowed me with the versatility of their acting. Having to play some 6 or 7 completely different characters must not have been an easy task but it was done so well (as was the make up) that they were barely recognisable at times.

God was also great, but there should have been more of him. Again I thought it was clever that they made him black!

All the great acting though did not change the fact that the jokes were few and far between and the best part of the whole movie was actually a deleted scene!

The original "Bedazzled" may be an old movie but it still works much better than this version. So my advice is to rent that one instead of this mediocre remake!
