  • A poignant story

Some bizarrely negative reviews here (from people who thought they were going to an action movie perhaps?). This moving tale - apparently semi-autobiographical - follows Ewan McGregor at two different and difficult times in his life as he loses his father and and finds a partner. A bit of a weepy - very sad in places - but in a good way. I really liked it.

OK films don't have to have much of a story to be worth watching but this is ridiculous. A bunch of self obsessed LA twats farting about doing nothing much. How did this get made?

satisfying and arty, ewan macgregor, and christopher plummer were really fine; the woman playing ewan's actor/girl friend was dazzling - worth all the attention and angst from dog and man! so a finely balanced piece. i suppose my only complaint is its self-consciousness about the newly gay dad bit - and, yes, i suppose its perception as a 'normal' (if there is such a thing) human inclination is just coming into conventional social coding strictures now, but it seemed to skewer some of the focus of the film; his dad's BF gets brought on only to make the son uncomfortable with his dad's previously-hidden inclinations. i did not sense any chemistry between plummer and BF, i have to say. it is nicely understated but i was never sure whether ewan character's love dilemma was center-stage or his dad's - and then there's the dying dad theme too which seems linked to the gay dad theme in a strained way (at least for me); but since overall it was entirely enjoyable, i suppose this tension is not too important - more a comment to the writer than to anyone else (since writer and director were same person, i suppose who better at resolving any potential anomalies than the writer/director in that case!).

  • Quietly moving

    Rated - 4.0 stars

I found the film to be quietly reflective, an exploration of commitment and understanding ... a story that avoided regrets by focusing on the compensations of life. The constant time shifts did mean you had to concentrate on where you were now, but this device was necessary in order to develop the meditative feel of the film. One was left wanting more of the father's story - about coming to terms with his new gay life at a mature age; instead, he seemed to have emerged as a fully-fledged gay man integrated into his new community. But the film is really about the son and what he learns from his father's relationships and about his own.

I watched Ewan McGregor being interviewed on Graham Norton, when he had just finished filming 'Beginners'.....

They were both so full of praise for this film, that I was really looking forward to seeing it.....

What a complete let down !!!

It starts at the end of the Fathers life.....

Constantly flicks back and forth, between the life of the Father (Christopher Plummer) from him coming out of the closet.....

And the life of the Son (Ewan McGregor) with his disastrous lovelife.

Difficult to follow, because of all the flicking about and when you do try to understand, you find it completely boring !!!

    Don't even bother with it.
