Winner of the best foreign language film Oscar, this charming picture recalls not only a key moment in Spanish history, at the dawning of the short-lived Republic, but also a golden age in film-making when romantic comedies were about innocence, discovery and love — and not gymnastic lust. Director Fernando Trueba claims his only mentor is Billy Wilder, but there is more than a touch of Buñuel about the opening sequences and the down-to-earth-with-a-bump finale. Although the romantic entanglements involving army deserter Jorge Sanz and the four bewitching sisters hold centre stage, the film is stolen by Fernando Fernan Gomez as their anarchist artist father.
A leisurely, enjoyable film of the past, as seen through rose-coloured spectacles; it is inoffensive and amusing without being particularly memorable.

Sorry - this was the third film we tried tonight - 1 damaged and 1 we didn't like. So, by the time we got round to this one, we weren't really in a mood for dark opening scenes and Buñuel type dialogue and action. Reading the reviews I guess we may have missed a masterpiece but maybe at a different time in a different atmosphere it woud have been worth sticking at. Sorry to all those film buffs who thought it was 5 star material.
Laid-back, very funny, intelligent, incredibly well acted, plotted and shot, I defy anyone to get bored with this movie. I've watched it three times and every time it's a wonderful, refreshing change from Hollywood schlock. The extra features offer a deep and entertaining insight into the cream of European filmmaking as well. But your average Hollywood producer would have trouble keeping up with this director's monologue, which is packed with artistic references and philosophical tidbits. It's equally good for watching with a pizza and a date, or for a lengthy historical and cinematographical analysis.
Good movie! Nice story, pacy direction but the translation is not the best... I watched it with my other half who is Spanish and lost count of the number of outbursts of laugher caused by the English subtitles not matching the Spanish sound track.
Fun, light hearted and certainly one to watch.
Set against the traumas of the Spanish Civil War, Belle Epoque turns away from tradegy and focuses on the romantic intertwinings of a deserter soldier and four sisters in rural Spain. Entertaining, funny and very watchable with a strong cast.
Cruz fans may be a little disappointed at her role in this movie which is somewhat limited and over-shadowed by the performances of her sisters.
The movie is obviously in Spanish with subtitles but I got used to this very quickly and it does not ruin the film.
A simple plot but captivating nonetheless.

Contrary to the impression, you'd get from the billing of the names, and the front cover of the film, this film is not a 'Penelope Cruz vehicle'. Instead, it is a good ensemble piece.
The feel of the countryside is a bit like 'Manon des Sources', but the film is more up-beat, and has a nice light touch. Great film.

A most unexpected delight. A film that starts with murder and suicide and includes a hanging does not promise well as a comedy, but somehow this succeeds at every level. Basically a happy movie.
Romp is the only word to describe this film. It's funny, beautiful, and sexy too. The girls are just outrageously pretty with Penelope Cruz being the least attractive of the lot! Wonderful Saturday night film. Rent it!
I thoroughly recomend this film even if your not into subtitled films or you dont understand Spanish.
The plot is very well thought out and the acting is tremendous. If you looking for a good laugh then you'll have a lot of fun with it. I havent laughed so much in a long time.
This is a highly enjoyable Spanish romp which is easily accesable to anyone, even if you don't enjoy watching sub-titled films. It's the story of a young army deserter and four daughters....you can guess the rest. Enjoy!
