    Excellent

A great film that sticks quite closely the the original Anglo-Saxon saga.

The film is very atmospheric with great action sequences, brilliant costumes and props and a decent cast who really bring this Nordic tale to the screen with style. If, like me, you love Historical epics then make sure you rent this one then sit back and enjoy being transported through the mists of time to a legend and myth from the Dark-ages.

IF YOU READ ONLY ONE REVIEW OF 'B&G'... PLEASE READ ME!

Looks as though some people got the wrong end of this stick with this one... NO, it's not the 2007 CGI-fuelled Beowulf (which I haven't seen but which looks like the worst of Hollywood to me), and yes, some of the accents are somewhat confused (all-too-Canadian Sarah Polley's Irish witch raises a smile or two), but this film is getting murdered by many reviewers on here - in my opinion - quite unduly.

Whilst slipping under the radars of big distributors and thus not making theatres, Beowulf and Grendel still manages never to feel like the tv movie it could've been. This is probably due in no small part to the stunning, otherwordly Icelandic locations and a gritty cast and costumery. The arms and armour are authentic, as are the sets (Hrothgar's smokey feasting hall exactly as imagined in the epic poem), and the viewer is left with a sense of peering through a cold and austere window in time, into the true 'Dark Ages'.

Ultimately this film's theme is one of realism; that of the lives of the people and of how they perceived their world. That is to say (and trust me - no 'spoilers' here as this is dealt with in the opening frames of the film), there ARE no monsters or trolls, only age-old prejudices against that which is different.

No cast-of-thousands here, no multi-million dollar SFX and no brooding Russell Crowes... just an honest and decently-told tale that will appeal to fantasy fiction fans and history buffs alike. DEFINITELY worth a look.

awful movie, think the 13th warrior on a budget of two pence & you have it in a nutshell, some really bad rubber suited costumes for the trolls & some really lousy dialogue for the 'heroes'. i cannot imagine they would call a troll a 'prick' somehow. as for the accents dont even go there eh. a danish witch with a new york accent :-)) ... pants movie!!!

Tale of Terrible Troll vs Handsome Hero

This film has a talented cast, wonderful scenery, classic costumes and accurate armour, yet it just lacked that something which could have turned this reasonable film into a real triumph.

Unfortunately the movie appears to rely upon the audience knowing something about the Scandinavian Saga of the hero Beowulf. The plot struts from one scene to another like a 'six pack' without the plastic 'thingy' which should hold it all together.

I always watch the film through to the end and although I was not disappointed, I just felt that this one had the potential to be so much more than it actually was.

It was hard to put a specific reason as to why this movie was just ordinary, but it lacked the spark that it should have had. This could have been one hell of an action film whatever the budget constraints may have been.

Gerard Butler was good in the title role and Ingvar Sigurdsson was a credible Grendel but somehow they got lost in the editing suite, lacking the impact that they deserved.

Finally, please do not be put off hiring this film as it was not a waste of time, just not the classic that it could have been. Worth the money as it has saved me buying another ordinary DVD.

Dreadful - not accurate certainly not good!

We chose this on the back of Gerald Butler being Beowulf as Timeline and Reign of Fire were both excellent. This is really dreadful. The plot is not at all faithful to the tale ofBeowulf and takes ages to get to the main action.

Don't waste time by renting this!

A BLANK DVD WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE USEFUL

Okay Tesco has offically tricked me....I saw Beowulf advertised on the TV and foolishly I assumed (since it was on the front page) that Tesco had aquired it already. ERRR NO!! This isnt the one on the TV with all the action. This is some historic drivel with rubbish story and rubbish acting.... this is almost rubbish on a biblical level. I HAD TO TURN IT OFF AFTER 20 MINS!!!

    worst film ever made (possibly)

We chose this film as Gerard Butler was in in and loved 300 his acting in that was amazing. But in this film i think it was impossible to look good or act well in. To this day i'm still at a loss as to what the film makers thought they were doing. I love a good historic epic movie and was expecting this too be a great visual extravaganza. Don't waste your time renting this film. One of the worst i've seen.

    Beowolf And Grendel

A modern adaption of an old film, still found it very boring, did not grip my mind at all, I am all for old folk tale films but come on put some life into the film.
