    Ridley Scott's newest effort American Gangster has beaten Beowulf to the top of the UK box office chart. For the weekend beginning November 16th, American Gangster took approximately £2.56 million while Beowulf debuted with around £2.19 million, according to AC Nielsen data.     The Golden Compass hits UK top spot

    Fantasy adventure film The Golden Compass debuted at the top of the UK box office this week, taking more than £7.2 million in ticket sales. Data from AC Nielsen placed the movie, which stars Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, at number one, followed by festive comedy Fred Claus at number two.     Fantasy adventure story The Golden Compass debuted at the top of the US box office this week, taking $25.8 million (£12.58 million) in box office receipts. According to data from the Hollywood Reporter, the movie knocked family comedy Enchanted off the top spot for the week ending December 9th.     Vince Vaughn and Paul Giamatti in Fred Claus have hit the top of the UK box office this week, according to new AC Nielsen data. Raking in over £1.93 million, the film debuted at number one ahead of another new entry, Hitman.
