Most helpful review Bergerac - Season 1

  • Good cop drama and ages fairly well.

The opening series of Bergerac has aged well, with a gripping first few stories and a steady stream of varied and interesting scripts. There's one episode on each of the three disks with audio commentary, which is mostly interesting and only occasionally does John Nettles fall into musing on how young he was back then... There are many interesting facts in the commentaries.

These episodes are edited down - the same edited versions that comprised the BBC's video release previously. For the most part it's not noticeable, but there's some shocking editing in one fight scene and a rather blatant censoring in one episode, leading to the odd sentence 'You always were a cynical.'

However I found the shows mostly very enjoyable and enjoyed revisiting the series - I look forward to seeing more.

I rented this 1st season out to explore if I remembered much about the series I did not!I was pleasantly suprised by the performances and story lines. It did not feel dated to me and although the relationship between Jim Bererac and his boring ex Father in law became a bit predictable, it did not distract from some good acting and complex human dynamics. I particularly liked seeing so many actors in their younger days and many including John Nettles have started well and continue to provide pleasurable watching.

So if you want a bit of nostalgia there is some but mainly some interesting scripts and refreshing angles on story (apart from the one with father in law or does it improve in later series?)

I am looking forward to exploring the other DVDs in series.

As an original avid viewer of the Bergerac

series, I must admit to be a bit dissapointed in my recent viewing.

it does come across as being a bit dated

    and moves along somewhat slowly.However

    it still was entertaining.
