The character of Jim Bergerac is the sort of fellow you might hope for as a friend, decent, honest, caring, kind-hearted, with oodles of integrity, good humoured, but also quite an action-man when pushed.

Part of the pleasure is watching his relationship with Charlie Hungerford, his ex father in law, who is morally and intellectually his inferior, but financially a great deal better-off, such that, in this series, bereft of a proper job, Jim is somewhat dependant on Charlie for Jobs and money, but Charlie is equally dependant on Jim for solving all his little problems as they arise. They love each other, but there is always a slight friction in their interaction caused by their motivation and priorities being so different.

I suppose the stories are a bit low-key by today's standards, but interesting enough to keep your attention while enjoying the interplay between the characters, which include the deep loyalties between Jim and his former police colleagues, and the animosity of the bumbling new police inspector.

Of course the background of beautiful Jersey makes a beautiful setting for the stories, and is added to by forays into France, and England.

I could recommend this to anyone.
