"...Few lesbian love stories have been so romantic; even fewer have conveyed such joy of sex..." -- Rating: B+
"...[An] extremely good-hearted comedy....A comic rhapsody to romantic love..."
"...Likable....[Crewson is] especially delightful..."
This film was voted Audience Award Winner at The London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival 1999.
It's not surprising! After a derth of decent lesbian movies this came as a breath of fresh air.
It's entertaining, amusing, interesting, and the cast is attractive! - what more could you want?
Oh yes...it's well written and nicely shot.
The film has something to say about all forms of women's and transgendered sexuality without being 'PC'. There are one or two of the usual stereotypes, but on the whole the characters are real and nicely fleshed out. You care about them. It helps that the actors really can act.
All involved give fine performances (the leads can be spotted in many other films and TV shows), but particular mention must be given to Wendy Crewson ('The 6th Day','Bicentennial Man') for her fine comic turn as Maggie's mother.
This is a lighthearted film that you can watch again and again.
Have had friends raving about this film for a couple of years so I decided to see what all the fuss was about. What a fab little film. It's fluffy and heart warming without being too sugary and the angst is kept to a minimum. One to watch with the G/F and a bottle of red.
Voted Audience Award Winner at The London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival 1999 this film unsurprisingly popular. After so few decent lesbian movies in the preceding years this came as a breath of fresh air.
It's amusing, interesting, entertaining and the cast is gorgeous! - what more could you want? Oh yes...it's nicely shot and well written.
The film has something to say about all forms of women's and transgendered relationships and sexuality without being heavy or 'PC'. There are one or two stereotypes, but on the whole the characters are nicely fleshed out and real. You care about them.
It helps that the actors really can act. All involved give fine performances (many can be spotted in other films and on TV). Special mention should be given to Wendy Crewson ('Spencer for hire', 'Bicentennial Man') for her fine comic turn as Maggie's mother. The scene where she discovers just what is 'better than chocolate' is amazingly funny!
This is a wonderful, light-hearted film that you can watch again and again.
Geeky Policital Lesbian bookstore owner - Check
Two lesbians moving in together on their first date - Check
Mother who doesn't know her daughter is a lesbian - Check
Every other lesbian romance stereotype - Check.
Happy ending - Check.
Perfect end of the week - too-knackered to-follow-a-decent-plot-line kind of movie. Best enjoyed with a few girly mates, and a bar of chocolate. Don't expect too much from it, and you won't be dispointed.
this film addresses a great number of socially 'unacceptable' stereotypes and excutes this delightfully (with a cherry on top!)
I found this film hypotising and really draws you into the lives of the characters involved and just when you think I know what is going to happen there is another interesting twist. I think this film should be seen by all so that everyone can see how by creating social prejudices you manage to alienate most of society.

A fairly lightweight, lesbian love story, in which some pretty serious issues are explored such as coming out, seeking acceptance, transgender problems, prejudice and insecurity. Somewhat stereotypical and cliched at times, but also funny, sensitive and enlightening for the less-informed.
It is set in Canada, low budget but well acted and shot. The cabaret/club scenes are wonderful to watch and brilliantly performed. In all a bitter-sweet experience,well-balanced and sensitively performed with a humorous and empathetic look at lesbian and transgender sexuality without falling into the regretably all too common trap of becoming a porno movie, thrilling the wrong audience for the wrong reasons! Worth watching whatever your sexuality.
This film is absolutely hilarious. The characters are all individual and for those of us who have spent time on the gay scene are quite believable. My favourite is Judy the transexual who is a stereotypical of people in this genre. The only criticism I can make is the film makers attempt at portraying the prejudice of gay people from other groups in society, such as the skinheads in this film. There is an account of problems of gay people,i.e parents which is dealt with humourosly and with good taste but the blatant prjudice from others and the extreme acts doesnt really fit the films genre and I feel the film loses the plot a little at this point. However for both gay and straight people this film is absolutely hilarious, it's just a shame they have to get too serious. Definitley well worth watching though.
This film is awful on many levels. The script is amateur, cheesy and cliché sodden, while the characters are nothing more than stereotypes. There's the butch athletic lesbian, the nerdish boyish looking lesbian whose had a sense of humour by-pass, the high school jock who gets loosened up by the nympho, the preening self absorbed trans-sexual, etc. The only character with any depth is the central one, Maggie. Fortunately she is played by the rather gorgeous Karen Dwyer, who looks great with or without clothes on.
There is something to be said for the cinematography and it is generally a very colourful film. However, if you do watch this, then I suggest turning the sound down for the florescent singers in the club. Otherwise you will be subject to the worst rhyming couplet since the end of Romeo and Juliet. Are you ready....? Here goes. 'I'm in love with...Julie Christie, she makes me go misty'. Oh dear.
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, the two central characters Maggie and Kim have the classic love at first sight with twist plot, but the most integral part of the movie are the supporting characters who are fantastic and provide a great depth to this film. A must watch for anyone who fancies a chuckle with a bit of love thrown in for good measure.
I thought this film was good because the characters aren't all stereotypes and are well created, as opposed to other lesbian films I've watched recently.
Enjoyable with a happy ending.
