Oh dear. Difficult to ctiticize this movie because in terms of its time and genre it fits the bill. The characters are sensitively portrayed and the economic pain of postwar Italy is etched into every facial and spoken line. The trouble for me is that I wanted the storyline to go somewhere else - or just to go somewhere. And I am no fan of Hollywood happy endings, believe me.
