Big Momma's House

Wasn't sure what to expect with this film, but am so glad I watched it, very very funny film, but then again anything with Martin Lawrence in is funny anyways.

Its difficult to sum up a film, which clearly doesn’t know how to describe itself. This film is categorised as a comedy, however, upon close inspection I have to disagree. I laughed a total of 2 times during the whole film, not big belly laughs mind you, more like chuckles. And for a film which has nothing else to offer other than the promise of humour, it felt tedious from very early on. Now, lets gets this straight kids, ‘Fat people are disgusting!’ Yup, that’s the clear message I got from this. You see, fat…. Can be funny ( in the same way religion can be lampooned harmlessly by Monty python or big noses in Roxanne with Steve Martin). Eddie Murphy proved this with the nutty professor, and that worked for him because he balanced the obvious finger pointing “look how fat he is!”, with a dose of sensitivity and pathos, However, martin Lawrence pulls a face like he’s just been offered a plate of dog sick for dinner as soon as he catches a glimpse of anything other than the lithe body of his female love interest, who despite the betrayal and creepy nature of Lawrence‘s patter, is inevitably doomed to hook up with him at the end of the film. The premise behind the film is lame, but to make the thin plot worse try to imagine sitting through an hour and a half of the worst Marge Simpson impression ever and that pretty much sums up Lawrence’s performance as Big Momma. One of the positive points I noticed was the fact that the leading lady had amazing teeth! The fact that I started to notice things like this, says it all. Terence Howard‘s (a good actor, sadly under-used here) bad guy character spent the entire film leading up to his revenge, and that showed promise, however, he was so easily and embarrassingly dispatched at the end of the film, one cant help but wonder why the hell people were so terrified of him in the first place. So, to close this I want to make it clear I’m glad I watched this film. Yup, that’s right...... but only because I can hopefully warn the unaware to steer clear of this garbage
