Oh, come on -- this is fantastic!

If you take a popular's boys comic about a British pilot, throw in a helicopter flying over the trenches of world war one and a gunfight on the London tower bridge, what do you get? Well, it turns out to be something like a cross between 'An American Werewolf in London' and Indiana Jones. For sheer entertainment value, it's actually one of the best films I've seen in quite a while.

But in terms of box office performance, this movie was a complete disaster for everyone involved, hence the lack of sequels. It killed the careers of it's stars Neil Dickson and Alex Hyde-White, and it literally killed Peter Cushing (okay, the film had nothing to do with his death -- but this is his last screen performance). The best thing about the movie is Neil Dickson's performance as the courageous, ridiculously heroic Biggles. He is quite simply fantastic, and it's a shame that his screen time is shortened in favour of the American star.

I suppose they could do a sequel now, casting Neil Dickson again and setting it at the start of World War II ... but that's unlikely to happen. Better just enjoy this one I suppose.

    Biggles to save the day

I first saw this film when I was youngster and wondered how it would fair today. The film is almost 20 years old and despite the 80's fashion sense and the lack of money put into special effects this can be an enjoyable film. Don't expect to be blown away with this film but if you have nothing to do on a Sunday afternoon this film could be an entertaining film to watch with the kids.
