If you take a popular's boys comic about a British pilot, throw in a helicopter flying over the trenches of world war one and a gunfight on the London tower bridge, what do you get? Well, it turns out to be something like a cross between 'An American Werewolf in London' and Indiana Jones. For sheer entertainment value, it's actually one of the best films I've seen in quite a while.
But in terms of box office performance, this movie was a complete disaster for everyone involved, hence the lack of sequels. It killed the careers of it's stars Neil Dickson and Alex Hyde-White, and it literally killed Peter Cushing (okay, the film had nothing to do with his death -- but this is his last screen performance). The best thing about the movie is Neil Dickson's performance as the courageous, ridiculously heroic Biggles. He is quite simply fantastic, and it's a shame that his screen time is shortened in favour of the American star.
I suppose they could do a sequel now, casting Neil Dickson again and setting it at the start of World War II ... but that's unlikely to happen. Better just enjoy this one I suppose.
I first saw this film when I was youngster and wondered how it would fair today. The film is almost 20 years old and despite the 80's fashion sense and the lack of money put into special effects this can be an enjoyable film. Don't expect to be blown away with this film but if you have nothing to do on a Sunday afternoon this film could be an entertaining film to watch with the kids.
I remember watching this film as a youngster over and over again!
Watching it 20yrs later and it still had me glued to the screen. A timeless classic. Worth watching for the soundtrack alone.

loved this film yesterday as much as i did 21 years ago, stood in line outside the pictures with my mates .now my children have seen it and its still as good today, good clean fun for the family
This is a classic film from the eighties that I had always wanted to see in the back of my mind after playing the computer game as a kid & reding the books.
It lived up to my expectations. Well written and acted - Brilliant.
Worth it just for the blue peter and the saturday morning superstore special features.
Especially the 80's kid who gave it 9 out of 10 and said it had better special effects than back to the future!
i vaguely remember watching this in the 80's and its still a good film but the very annoying thing about it is the very 80's and bad at that soundtrack which is not very subtle. worth a watch if you like time travel films.
A fortune spent on a Budget movie. Not as good as it could have been.Lots of potential unforfilled...Shame.
Peter Cushings final film is a surprisinly good romp- just ignore the crappy eighties electronic music and naff exploreres in the pot ending and what your left with is a halfway decent time travel romp- I can imagine this wouldn't win fans with the original biggles fans-and this is the films major problem ,trying to win new fans and keep the old ones happy-always a problem. The stunt flying however is pretty good-my kids watched it without getting too restless which is always a good sign!
