The material will be familiar to Hicks fans, and would be funny, but the whole performance is ruined by the Whooping and 'Hell Yeah's' from the American audience.
Thankfully only 30 mins long.
Rent his Dominion Theatre performance instead.
I'll hold my hand up and admit to being one of the aforementioned 'big' fans. I've got all seven Rykodisc CDs, every single bootleg I could get my greasy mitts on, Cynthia True's biography, the Relentless DVD and more. Oh yeah, and 'Live' is currently on order from Rykodisc. So I'm somewhat biased.
So... being such a connoisseur of Hicks' art, you'd think there'd be nothing here for me, right?
Wrong. This is one of the funniest stand-up performances I've seen.
Yes, I've heard pretty much all of the material elsewhere, either verbatim or slightly different, but it still has the power to make me laugh. Not just chuckle, but laugh out loud.
The only two shortfalls of this recording are its length (only 28 minutes) and the American audience, which seems given to whooping like crazed gibbons or the hillbillies from Tennessee mocked by Hicks elsewhere. If it wasn't for Hicks spirited cry of 'Chicagoooooooooooo!' at the opening, I'd have thought he was stuck in Fife, Alabama judging by the audience's behaviour.
For those already familiar with Hicks' work, this is yet one more fantastic addition to the collection. For those unfamiliar with it, this is an excellent introduction. I just wish it was longer.
