Bill VIola's films try to express poetically what it is like to be alive. In 'The Passing' he even films his dying mother, but it is not horrific nor intrusive. It is intimate and loving. Through the night his dreams and nightmare and her dying thoughts mix together until, in a flood where birth, life and grief float or drown, the dawn slowly comes. A profound and tender film.
