Definitely one of the best British films ever
By McClennan (424 reviews) from St Helens , 24 Aug 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
Capturing the change in Britain around the time it was made, it'd make a great film to watch before Blow-Up. A British classic which spoke volumes to me.
Non-judgemental, funny and warm in parts,it really does give you a feel for the change in British society as the 60s were kicking in. Despite the fantasies that Billy has, the film is entrenched firmly in reality and gives honest and realistic reactions to the situations that arise in the film.- Was this review helpful to you?

By a customer from Sleaford , 26 Aug 2009A brutally honest depiction of broken dreams. Left me melancholic but still glad I saw it - extremely funny at times.- Was this review helpful to you?

Classic
By Bullybass (52 reviews) from Exeter , 20 Jul 2009I didn't actually watch this one because I have seen it several times before. This was one for my partner who hadn't seen it. I guess if you're watching it for the first time it will seem quite dated but it remains one of the classic sixties british movies and should be seen as an essential part of British Cinema.- Was this review helpful to you?

Compelling
By 3pac (3 reviews) from Manchester , 04 May 2009Intersperesed with surreal fantasies contrasting with the bleak onset of industrial Britain, Billy Liar captures the balance of ambition and loss with style. Whilst the imagined scenes are occassionally a little lacking in subtlety, they serve to illustrate how difficult it was growing up in working class Britain in the 60s.
It is easy to sympathise with Billy's delusions as he struggles to be the somebody he believes he can be. The direction helps bring out the anonymity of a 'public' that Billy fights so hard not to become one of - yet it seems at the end, he has some realisation of the fact that being normal isn't the worst thing you can be.
This is a fascinating exploration of what it means to live life as you might be supposed to, and how being normal can often be crushing.- Was this review helpful to you?

Billy Liar
By a customer from Crook , 02 Jan 2009Great film, I studied this at school and went to see the play at the Theatre. The film itself won't be for everyone but I rate it highly.- Was this review helpful to you?
