Remember the famous highway pursuit of OJ Simpson? Well this TV-movie focuses on a similarly daring chopper chase, without ever approaching anything like the same suspension of disbelief. Second World War veteran David Janssen is happy providing traffic reports for a Salt Lake City radio station until he witnesses a gang pull off a bank robbery and take teller Elayne Heilveil as a hostage. But his heli-heroics fail to provide the necessary thrills, with a roadside fuel stop seriously slowing the momentum. Jordan Cronenweth's aerial photography is steady rather than spectacular, while a supporting Ralph Meeker has too little to do.
Oh dear, where to begin... This was knocked out somewhere in the mid-late 80's (and it shows). Basically, it's about a bunch of birds that attack people. Now, I'm not even going to go into comparisons with Hitchcock's 'The Birds' because there is none. What I will tell you is that it stars fairly recognisable American actors Christopher Atkins and Michelle Johnson. I dunno what the hell those two were doing in this bizarre Mexican film, surounded by a bunch of badly dubbed, non-english speaking wooden-tops, and, judging by the perplexed look on their faces, they didn't know either. Anyway, some people get attacked by killer birds...in slow motion. Then more people get attacked by killer birds...in slow motions. Then more people - you get the point. There's so much slow motion used in this film that it would've only ran half the length had the technique not been applied, and that would have been a large dose of the merciful, I can tell you. And then there's the music...only, it's not music, it's dire (imagine electronic cats being electronically strangled, if you can). Can it get any worse? Yep, because it all ends without any explanation whatsoever, although we do get the obligatory 'twist ending'.
WHY YOU'D WANT TO SEE THIS FILM: To see the perplexed look of constant confusion on the American Actors' faces and the hilarious 'twist' ending.
WHY YOU'D WANT TO GIVE IT A MISS: Because you have other trash films to watch that are so much better that this.
I rented this film as I was intrigued to see what other work Christopher Atkins had done after I had seen him in 'Dallas.'
What a mistake!!
Whilst his acting was about average and what I had expected, the rest of the cast was so wooden and forced it was completely embarrassing, not to mention several totally un-necessary and gratuitous close up shots of the leading actress's naked chest! (Nothing to get excited about, all you fellas out there!!) The best acting was by the birds themselves.
This is a really terrible attempt to recreate Hitchcock's 'The Birds' with slight variations.
Trust me-do NOT rent this title unless you want a really good laugh at how terrible some actors/directors can be!
