Excellent
By a customer from London, England , 02 Sep 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
The story starts by describing a true whirlwind paris romance between an ageing american writer and a young french waitress. Things however do not last long and as the relationship starts to change in nature we see the worst in human nature. Lots of plot twists and spills... this is a MUST SEE!!- Was this review helpful to you?

(33)Good watchable erotic drama
By Bobsview (554 reviews) from Gloucestershire , 30 Jan 2013A good watchable erotic drama about a couple who are united by physical attraction but after this fades (for the guy) their relationship becomes destructive and damages another couple. Sexually charged, dark and sad. Gets even better on second watch so persever with it-it is worth it. There is a big surprise awaiting you at the ending and is worth watching for this. Hugh Grant is very young in this and a bit feeble to be honest and a bit of a weak link in the cast.- Was this review helpful to you?

Emotionally unconvincing
By erp (67 reviews) from Manchester , 18 Aug 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
If only more of the acting of this film had been of the quality of Emmanuelle Seigner's! Although I didn't find it the compelling study of compulsion and degrading sexuality that some watchers have I think I would have done if Coyote had been able to express compulsion and create conflicting feelings in the way Seigner did. In the absence of that kind of emotional power at its centre I found its sadomasochistic plot vaguely disgusting and pointless. And I didn't really feel where Nigel and Fiona's involvement was coming from.- Was this review helpful to you?

Bitter Moon an unconfortable truth about humanity
By Tessyfal (1 review) from Kenley , 07 Feb 2012Bitter Moon is an interesting and captivating portrayal of the base instincts that an uncontrolled, indisciplined and destructive, yet deeply passionate form of love can bring to the surface in human beings.
The desperation, the cruelty, the selfishness, the darkness that it invokes.
The revelation of some of the most intimate fantasies of humankind when in relationship that most people who like to be considered civilized struggle to keep firmly under lock and key in the underbelly of their subconscious.- Was this review helpful to you?

YOU WILL NOT BE LEFT UNSCATHED BY THIS MASTERPIECE
By a customer , 04 Jan 2012It has been a while since I watched it but wanted to share my opinion of it.
First time I watched it was on telly, had no idea of the plot just that it was Polansky...Nothing prepared me to what I discovered that night!
Seigner is often portrayed as a debauched woman by her husband director, rightly so here.
This film was so shockingly unconventional to me, in its darkness and the sexual nature of their relationship was mind blowing in all its beauty and ugliness.
Hugh Grant & Kristen show their young uptight Brit faces, Coyote is outstandingly good, so disturbing in so many ways: I pitied him and also hated him at the same time, his character is that strong! Seigner is hot and wild, cruel and yet victim.
Not to be missed if you like character studies and sexual plots. And French women...A classic and under rated film for connaisseurs.- Was this review helpful to you?
