LOVEFiLM Review Biutiful

  • 3 stars out of 5

    By Jonathan Crocker from LOVEFiLM

Javier Bardem received an Oscar and BAFTA nod for his performance in this Mexican drama, and deservedly so.

This movie is not about the conflict from the main character and his childhood friend. Who wrote that in this page not even had seen the movie...which is fantastic....but synopsis like that just doesn't give any information what it is about...please try to change it...

  • beautiful film

This is a very moving, lovely and touching film. Very thought provoking too. Bardem is his usual excellent actor self. Well worth a watch as an easy going but moving story.

  • Meldodrama with lack of dramatic structure

    Rated - 3.5 stars

No doubt about it, this film is very sombre. I felt it deserved at least a 3 for its artistic direction and sociopolitical relevance in modern day Barcelona with its attendant underworld problems and gave the film 3 and a half stars as Bardem is a great presence; there are some very touching moments of him with his kids, you can't help but feel tied up with his situation in some ways. But, the film is so gloomy. It plods along in dark and dreary fashion like a bug* scuttling along underfoot apologising to its superiors for its existence. There is a kind of apologetic tone to the film, it's relentlessly morbid though it touches very humanly (in large part thanks to Bardem's character) upon some very serious issues: immigration and exploitation though the narrative doesn't give room for hope. The film has little objective structure (for a purpose no doubt): it's very much a snapshot of a fly's eye view on a broken family's life and the daily precariousness of surviving with no real social security, family or state provided. But it's this lack of structure perhaps that renders the film even more hopeless in its portrayal of the life of Bardem and co. than it really needs to be. This is cinema, people expect a story that has a goal and a message. I dare say the director knows full well what he's doing but the film suffers for this lack of denouement. * C'mon Amazon. Cxxxroach is hardly an offensive word!

Boring and pretentious. It reminded me of the worse of hollywood 'macho movies'. I hired this movie based on the reviews I had read on here. I was very disappointed.

This film is poignant and sad, a film about humanity and the messiness of survival in a modern world. I kept wishing for there to be less suffering, for better things to happen and they do but not always in expected ways. Watch it and you too will remember to value and love what it is that is important to you; your children and your parents.
