Black Books is a complete oddity on modern British TV. You have your dark, Lynchian weirdness - 'League of Gentlemen', your clever observation - 'The Office', and your utter rubbish - 'Two Pints of Lager...', but Black Books is different. Just like Father Ted, Black Books is completely pointless, yet the genius wordplay and surreal situations mark it out as something warm and special that will have you chuckling uncontrollably. I found series 2 to be slightly less well written than the first (the loss of Graham Linehan from the writing partnership the main reason for this), but still full of superb episodes and individual moments. There are maybe too many guest stars, but the interaction between the three main characters is a joy to behold. Fran gets more to do individually, while watching Bernard and Manny try to run a bookshop/coffee shop/restaurant is simply hilarious. Rent immediately. Do I look like a heron?
I think anyone who might be thinking of renting this will have seen series one. However you only have to know the principles of the plot, man owns books shop & hates customers and staff, to get the idea. What doesn't come over is the sheer breadth and depth of humour. For every bottle over the head there is an unnoticed look, saying or gesture.
Dylan Moran is awesome as the misanthropic bookshop owner, Bill Bailey is genius as the Baldric to his Blackadder. Also Tamsin Grieg is fantastic as the loopy best friend who is as much of a nutter as they are.
All I can say is that this is some of the best comedy out today. Go and rent it now!!
