An under-rated holiday horror that pre-dated the Halloween slasher cycle and practically established the genre's hard-and-fast rules. A maniac is on the loose in a closed-for-Christmas girls' boarding school in director Bob Clark's neat little chiller, which scores thanks to its stylish visuals, fiendishly inventive slaughter and unexpected twists. Promoted at the time with the wicked tag line “If this picture doesn't make your skin crawl, it's on too tight!”, the film also features above-average performances from Olivia Hussey and Margot Kidder. Clark went on to direct Porky's and the minor Yuletide classic A Christmas Story.

    the oldies are the best!

This film is both tense and frightening without the gore, and blood that seems necessary to make a horror today. even though it is dated, there is generally a chilling effect to it.

the idea of prank phonecalls doesnt sound too frightening, but these phonecalls the girls receive are a taster of what is to come from a sick mind.

the film builds up to a tense climax which is , even though predictable to the killers identity, still manages to frighten.

    Festive film flops

Christmas is notoriously a time to churn out movies that would never normally see the light of day, but even seasonal goodwill is no excuse to watch Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. The 1964 film, which sees Saint Nick get kidnapped by Martians upset that their children have no-one to give them presents, has been voted the biggest Christmas turkey of all time in a new poll. Pia Zadora stars in the Nicholas Webster-directed film, which only ever made it to video. It tops a list, drawn up by... Read more
