LOVEFiLM Review Black Dynamite

  • 3 stars out of 5

    By Tom Charity from LOVEFiLM

At once a satire of and homage to Blaxploitation films, Black Dynamite is an action-packed and riotous trip back to 1970s Black America.

One of the best films I have seen in years. Who would have thought the uber serious Michael Jai White was a comedy genius. Seriously watch this film !!!

This film was absolutely hilarious literally one of the funniest I've ever seen and I've seen a lot! It was the best parody of a genre I've seen since Airplane. Brave statement but so true.

Really, really poor film, just not very funny at all. It tried to make fun of 70's style low budget stilted type acting, but you've got to be really clever to do this, and this film wasn't. Pretty boring story line, I was really trying hard to laugh and enjoy this but it wasn't to be. My other half fell asleep and I wished I'd read a book instead. Seriously, don't bother with this one.

Black Dynamite, is a Blacksploitation satire spoof laced with near constant explosive action- containing a line-up of the craziest cats and their misfortune to be on the wrong side of the 70s 'smoothest baddest mutha to ever hit the screen.'

The films plot is fairly shallow as you'd expect from this kind of comedy: Focusing on the omnipotent protagonist Black Dynamite and his infinite hunt for justice. However, this only adds to the style of satire much in the way Airplane's awful plot adds to the overall enjoyment of the feature.

In regards to the comedy it comes thick and fast, satirizing African American culture in a simple but surprisingly hilarious way:- This means big afros, jive slang, bling, pimps, the whole package. This relentless comedy machine is well oiled with ample amounts of slapstick; majority of which includes people flying out of windows but becoming much more ridiculous as the film escalates. The soundtrack gives a great finish, having a chorus of 'Dy-no-mite' resounding every time our favourite cat nails another evil mutha.

Overall the film is an excellent casual watch, great for having friends over. Think if Austin Powers was a black & black belt. I guarantee you'll be quoting it for weeks.

I am not quite sure what exactly happens through this film, as it was very difficult to maintain my concentration!

Basically Dynamite goes on the hunt for his bother's killer and has a load of fights along the way. However, if this is your type of film, then you'll probably enjoy it!
