Jet Li is the Black Mask. Michael (Li) was an integral part of Project 701, an experimental government program that created superhuman men and women and turned them into indestructible fighting machines. He escapes that dangerous world and instead works as a simple librarian, changing his name to Simon. But soon he is drawn right back in when his former master turns against the government that betrayed Project 701 and demands that Michael rejoin the squad to help carry out his evil plan to take over the Hong Kong drug trade.
Directed by Daniel Lee, BLACK MASK is an action-packed comic book brought to life, filled with the requisite explosions, motorcycle stunts, black-and-white flashbacks, laser weaponry, killer CDs, and some major carnage. The terrific martial arts sequences were choreographed by the great Yuen Wo Ping, who was responsible for the fight scenes in THE MATRIX and CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON. Michael's final showdown with his former commander is electrifying--literally. Li's charming good looks and innocent smile lead the way in this exciting tale produced by Tsui Hark.

This was the film that introduced UK audiences to Jet Li, now best known as the sleek villain from Lethal Weapon 4. The outrageous plot has Li as a former member of an elite group of assassins who, after radical nerve surgery, feels neither pain nor emotion. He escapes to take up a new life — as a librarian! — but is forced back into action, as the mysterious Black Mask, when he suspects his old chums are behind an attempt to wipe out the Hong Kong Triads. Director Daniel Lee takes the action sequences to mind-boggling new extremes with some jaw-dropping scenes of ultra-violence, while Li showcases the full range of his dazzling physical talents. Only the clunky dubbing lets the side down.
Extravagently absurd and violent martial arts movie, which is often visually inventive, with fights that prefigure some of the action in The Matrix, on which Yuen Wo-Ping also worked.
A very likeable film, full of comedy and fight scenes, you can't ask for much more. Jet Li's acting is a little wooden (this is the first film I've seen him in), but then he's not best known for his acting now is he? There are also some great special effects in it, when the leader of the speacial forces group is shooting at Jet Li, there are some amazing effects (or maybe I'm just easily pleased)
<p>
I thought this was a very funny and well paced film, worth a watch.
