Wonderful Rio carnival reworking of legend

Several decades before City of God came this re-working of the Orpheus in the Underworld story set at carnival time in Rio. This film also gave European audiences one of their first tastes of bossa nova. The song Manha da Carnaval became a hit. Not just a story it uses imagery in a way that builds tension and emotion-and that seems quite rare now (though perhaps it's just difficult to see the films that do this in any mainstream cinema).- Was this review helpful to you?

Black Beauty

A young woman Eurydice arrives in the city on the run from a mysterious stalker. She takes refuge with her cousin Serafina and falls in love with Orpheo, a tram driver and musician who lives in the adjoining shack. They spend the night together and dance in the carnival, but her nemesis dressed as death catches up with Eurydice and tragedy follows. Film starts in a blaze of colour, dance and music with stunning images of Rio, before shifting to the surreal as Orpheo searches the city for his lost love. Shame that the acting is amateur and often irritating, but this is still a feast for the eyes and Marpessa Dawn's extraordinary beauty will linger long in the memory.- Was this review helpful to you?

Sweet Blast From The Past
By a customer from Sussex , 03 Apr 2010I saw this movie shortly after it came out - 50 years ago! It enchanted me then and it does again seeing it for the first time since. It doesn't date. It is a splendid rendering of the ancient myth and the ending is especially effective. And the music is haunting.- Was this review helpful to you?

Rio (Brazil) Carnival

You can decide whether you would have liked to join in. Some of the characters were quite endearing, in a very thin story, and the general frenzy and dancing were impressive, but not to my taste. (I had requested the DVD in error, mistaking the title for Cocteau's film!)- Was this review helpful to you?
