This tense, glossy and violent thriller stars Michael Douglas and Andy Garcia as New York cops on assignment in Japan where Yakuza gangsters wield razor-sharp swords and where Kate Capshaw hangs out in a nightclub à la Marlene Dietrich. This being a Ridley Scott film, the atmosphere is so hyped up that the picture threatens to burst an artery every second, and Jan De Bont's photography (he went on to direct Speed and Twister ) delights in the neon-lit locations and makes the city of Osaka look like a vision of hell. Beneath all this is a very conventional cop thriller that makes an occasional comment about Japan's economic miracle following Hiroshima.

Effective thriller, though many may find unappetising its theme of redemption through revenge and violence.
Black Rain is not Ridley Scott's best movie but it is a good action movie to watch on a night in without taxing the brain too much.
Cinematography is good and no whizz bang explosions which a lot of modern cop movies use to make up for lack of plot /characters message.
Under scrutiny by his superiors for allegedly dipping into confiscated drug money, New York vice cop Michael Douglas can expect no sympathy from his ex-wife, who is gouging him for alimony. Douglas gets a chance to redeem himself when he is assigned to escort Japanese mob boss Yusaku Matsuda back to his own country to stand trial. Upon arriving in Osaka, Douglas and his partner Andy Garcia are tricked into releasing their prisoner. Now on the outs with both the American and Japanese police authorities, Douglas is forced to deal with the Yakuza-the Japanese equivalent of the Mafia-to retrieve the elusive Matsuda.
Not the most memorable of action films; certainly Ridley Scott has done better with both Alien and Blade Runner. However, it has its good points, namely the music and the sets. Set design is Ridley Scott's strong point, of course; in this case the Steelworks in particular are wonderfully evocative. One might even guess that it was the inspiration for James Cameron's final location in Terminator 2, made a year later.

This film plays host to 2 fine actors Michael douglas and Andy Garcia (L.A. Confidential) the mafia are onto them after cpaturing a criminal in the underworld of drugs and conterfiet plates.. after taking a long flight to return the futuretive back to china a long awaited war breaks out with the slaughtering of andy garcia his partner.
Needless to say war between the chinese and michael douglas ensues let the war begin
Also reccommend L.A Confidential with this movie
This DVD transfer is the worst I have come across.
My VHS version of Black Rain is better quality than this.
This film has a stylish look about it (MR Scott's excellent direction), it seems a little dated watching it today but it is very enjoyable. The film has a few violent moments a bit like an Arnie film from the late 80's. Overall worth seeing.
This film is a little dated but once into it its a good film. Michael Douglas plays hes part well. Sit down and watch..you will enjoy !!
I first saw this movie in the late 80's and it is still as good as it was then. Douglas and Garcia in Japan after a 'Yakuza gangster' they first encounter in New York but let escape when they have to escort him back to the Japanese authorities. The ensuing action is good (but a little bit dated by today's standards). The storyline is credible and keeps the viewer interested to the end. Very watchable.
