Brit-Com at its best.
By mattlev from Surrey , 23 Jun 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
It is my opinion that the fouth series of Blackadder is the greatest. With word play, inuendo and a little slapstick thrown in this series is arguably the greatest of all British comedy series.
Aswell as being unrelentigly hilarious, the six episodes deal with moving and relevant issues about the first world war. No sit-com has since ended on such a moving and serious note.- Was this review helpful to you?

(113)A masterpiece of comedy where tragedy is the real story
By Bauman (4 reviews) , 11 Dec 2011One of the best 'comedies' of all time. How can we laugh at something so sad and horrific? That's a sign of how well this is written, directed and acted. An exposure of the illogical and irrational establishments in Europe who'd fallen out with each other and a so called World War ensued. The average the 'Tommy' was merely cannon fodder to over the top like a game of toy soldiers on a table top. Humanity was reduced to a numbers game and also one where class distinction was the difference between life and death. This script is pure quality of a very rare sort which makes it, in my opinion, a masterpiece.- Was this review helpful to you?

Brilliant comedy!!!
By Stinger (38 reviews) from Rochdale , 19 Feb 2011When this series came around I was a lttle worried that such a bloody war as The Great War could be used as comedy material. If it wasn't done well it could have been seen as insulting the memories of our men and boys who paid a terrible price.
Thankfully the writing was excellent and the cast used it to good effect and produced a comedy series that highlighted how our 'Lions' were led by 'Donkeys' as the quote goes.
Blackadder although not wanting to 'go over the top' never comes across as cowardly but as someone using the modicum of common sense he was born with.
The final episode was also very well done and the last scene departed from comedy and really was excellently played as they finally 'go over the top' and meet their destiny. As the final act comes to an end the screen fades to a field of red poppies which was a fitting tribute to the many men who didn't find that time funny.
Watch it and enjoy it as comedy of this quality only comes round once in a while.- Was this review helpful to you?

Nothing else like it!
By AlastairBlue (1 review) from North Lanarkshire, Scotland , 28 Jan 2011Fantastic comedians included in the series who continue to make headlines in the comedy world in the UK.
There truly is nothing else like Blackadder Goes Fourth in TV history. It still amazes me how one of the world's bloodiest conflicts can be made into a comedy with such compassion and respect.- Was this review helpful to you?

In Flanders Fields
By a customer from Doncaster , 15 Oct 2010The final Blackadder series. The top brass and Melchitt in particular, appear to be all going mad. Captain Darling is pitched out of his comfortable rear echelon job and ordered over the top with the rest of PBI (Poor Bloody Infantry!) Despite the horror and squalor humour rings out of such dire circumstances as a front line trench somewhere on the battlefield of France. The final sequence when the 'over the top' charge goes into slow motion and the dissolve into a field of poppies is so affecting and poignant - and gets me every time. Perhaps having family members who didn't return has something to do with it.- Was this review helpful to you?
