Just as good as the first time!

This was a wonderful miniseries with lots of twists and turns in it. There are people just bursting out in song and dance routines left right and center which could have been disasterous but actually worked really well due to the quality of the acting and storyline and good choice of appropriate songs. There is also a murder mystery/crime drama storyline which is intermingled with a touching family story about an ambitious arcade owner. Definetly well worth watching if you have'nt seen it and if you have then you don't need telling as you already know how good it is!!!

    Excellent off the wall series

I loved this show. Its an odd idea but a bit of a hoot. I wasn't sure about the singing and dancing to begin with but got to love it as time went by. Doctor Who fans will enjoy seeing David Tennant singing as well as acting. Some stand-out performances all round though.

    Viva BBC

I loved this. To see top BBC actors giving it all they have to sing there hearts out and bring a lot of light to this dark comedy. Morrisey is brill as the larger and life main charator Ripley. David Tennent is very good as the dark detective who is brought in to solve a murder at Ripley's gaming arcade. Sarah Parish is lovely as the long suffering wife of Ripley who falls in love with Tennent. Then the funs begins with lots of tears and laughter along the way with plenty of musical tunes to liven up the precedings. Well worth a watch.

    Surreal of fun

This is a weird series to categorise. In one sense a detective story 'a la Dennis Potters Singing Detective' but in another an old fashioned romance. It leaves lots of bits unsaid or unclear, but if you just let it wash over you, like the tide, the end result you get is one of those afterglow nice feeling memories. For me it was a trip down memory lane, I grew up near Blackpool which, with its kiss me quick and squeeze me slow, sleaze and tacky bright lights glamour is truly the underlying theme and star of the show.

If you want a light hearted bit of fun, with some good tunes give it a whirl

    Great series!

My boyfriend wanted to hire this, and i was far from interested, but, i thought i would give one episod a go and was hooked from there on! Very good, and i love Sarah Parrish, always a very watchable actress. This is one for both the guys and the gals!

Well worth your investment of time

Generally I don't like musicals, I think they're usually pointless and have too many songs that detract from the narrative. There are exceptions, Moulin Rouge and Chicago were brilliant and The Singing Detective, (TV original and Hollywood version), worked well, and Bride and Prejudice was amusing, (though overlong). Blackpool has obviously been influenced by Dennis Potter's work so is unoriginal in that respect, and I don't think the songs actually add anything - generally they don't develop the storyline, just mark time with some funny visuals and bizarre dancing combinations, but you can live with that. The songs don't detract too badly and are somewhat comical, though largely superfluous, but Blackpool is a really riveting drama and murder plot. (Despite the comments of one reviewer here who seems to object to a musical having songs in it !!)

David Morrisey is great as unredeemable loathsome Ripley Holden and Sarah Parrish is excellent, as she always is, as his long suffering beautiful but bored wife. I got interested quite quickly even before the body turned up, but when David Tennant steps on stage as the ever eating Inspector Carlisle the play just reels you right in. I'm not really sure what it is about Tennant, (probably blunt talent), but he always seems to hit the right tone and depth with every character he breathes life into, and in this he's really entertaining as the manipulative sleuth who susses people out at first contact.

So even if you're not of the musical loving fraternity, which I'm not, rent this if you like a cracking yarn with strong performances.
