Wesley Snipes plays the half-mortal, half-vampire who hunts down creatures of the night in this flashy and very violent action adventure based on the popular Marvel Comics character. Aided by gruff-and-tough Kris Kristofferson, he sets out to thwart the evil schemes of fellow vampire Stephen Dorff, whose plans include running a nightclub that will supply humans for his fiendish pals to feed on. This is daft stuff indeed, but Snipes looks great in leather, it's snappily paced and the performances are perfectly tongue in cheek.
"...The battle scenes are pure comic-book derring-do replete with acrobatics borrowed from Hong Kong action thrillers and continual morphing..."
Comic-book hokum done with some style and a great deal of noisy action; its nonsense is taken more seriously than it deserves.
This film simply kicks ass in a way most other action films don't. Blade is super-cool as is his arch-enemy played by Stephen Dorff. There's a level of harsh violence you rarely see in today's money-maximising rating lowering movies (see Terminator 3), and the effects are of a really high quality throughout; there's a great attention to detail and you can see they really did put a lot of effort into this movie. With loads of style and action this has to be one of the premier horror thrillers of all time
Just a politically correct vehicle for Wesley Snipes, a silly update to the vampire story (if that?s possible).
Fight scenes are moody atmospheric yes, but it?s going nowhere fast.. err. Well sadly it does run into another 2 films. Don?t waste your time on this one.
If you like special effects and unreal films, this film covers that sort of criteria. Brill vampire movie
This is perhaps one of the most atmospheric movies ever. I'm not a Snipes fan but I dont think anyone else could have pulled it off.
Even if this kind of film isn't your kind of film, I would give it a chance. It is an absolutly amazing film, especially when watching on a Home Cinema. Although it seems as you progress through the Blade Trilogy the movies become better and better, this certainly is an amazing start. Some of the effects are amazing for a film made in 1998.
A must see for a fan of any intense movie genre.

This is the best. There is not a single thing in this film i dislike. even now a few years on from when it was released i still love watching this film. Blade is brilliant and is his enemy Deacon Frost. The action, fighting sequences, storyline the way they crate blade's character and wesley snipes does an incredible job of bringing it all to life. its all brilliant. If you have never seen this then BUY IT NOW!!!!
just pure vampire kicking class...
watch again and again...
Don't usually like sci-fi adventure stuff but this was different & excellent from the start the film begins with a rave at the back of a walk in freezer and the rave fills with blood from the water nozzles above and then Blade appears.
Good casting with Kris Kristofferson & Wesley Snipes as Blade.
Can't wait to see Blade II!
This was a movie that my sci-fan buddies had been urging me to watch for i don't know how long. I watched it with some trepidation with my girlfriend on a Saturday night and was definately pschyced for the action. It didn't disappoint, you have to overlook the clear flaws in the script (how come these bad-ass vamps have never got their act together before now/Kristoferssons appalling acting) and enjoy for the fight scenes. If you enjoyed The Matrix then you've already watched and enjoyed Blade.
