this is a great film! barry otto is wonderful as harry joy an ad exec who has a heart attack and when he regains consiousness believes he is in hell, his loving wife is having an affair with a trusted friend, his children are incestuos druggies, his job is selling death. the cicus is coming to town and elephants are trained to sit. bad girls hold the key to the good life but love can be a difficult thing to prove.watch laugh and maybe cry.

Do they not get enough foreign films in Oz that this mish-mash of styles seems to be well thought of ?

It belatedly takes on the surealism of the films from the 60's by such as Lindsay Anderson although it does seem to be a precursor to the Spike Jonze style of metafilm storytelling.

There are some ok parts but they are submerged by the over-indulgence of tricks and quirks for their own sake.

This is one of my all-time favourites. Some American friends introduced it to me back in the mid-80s and I became hooked. I've seen it umpteen times (including in London, where a healthy number of people walked-out in disgust) and its intoxicating blend of realism, idealism, fantasy, huge slices of bad-taste and - ultimately - optimism, make it essential viewing for the discerning film lover. Based on the Peter Carey book of the same name.
