[Highly rated reviewer]Blood Diamond is set in Sierra Leone in 1999 where Rhodesian-born Danny Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio) smuggles diamonds out of the country and sells them on to the diamond merchants. Sierre Leone is in the middle of a bloody civil war and the sale of the diamonds, known as conflict diamonds raises money for weapons and thus supports the violent war. Djimon Hounsou is remarkable as Solomon Vandy, the fisherman whose life is turned upside down when his family are torn away from him, his son is taken by the rebels to be trained as a child killer, and he is forced to work in a diamond mine where he unearths a rare pink diamond. When the mine is attacked, he buries the diamond. DiCaprio hears of its existence and sets off with Hounsou to recover it and split the proceeds. DiCaprios motives are at first purely financial whereas Hounsous objective is to find and reunite his family. The story is gripping, the characters are strong, and Leonardo DiCaprio gives a tremendous performance as the mercenary who reveals a compassionate side. The film was shot in Sierra Leone, Mozambique and South Africa and everyone, particularly the children, gives such convincing performances it is easy to forget they are acting. Very highly recommended.

compelling viewingBy a customer , 12 Dec 2012
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS Show review anywayHidethis is a gripping story revealing the brutality involved in greed. compelling viewing with brilliant acting, reveals some horrible facts regarding the treatment of people in Sierra Leone. Although I initially shuddered at the violence of the opening scenes, I quickly became engrossed.
Absolutely BrilliantBy a customer , 12 Nov 2012This is one of those films that stays with you long after you have watched it. It is thought provoking and an eye opener into what drives people and makes them behave the way they do. The acting was impeccable. The performances of both Di Caprio and Houndsou were outstanding.
Watch it - you will be moved.
GREAT FILM ABy poddingtonpea6 (3 reviews) , 03 Nov 2012This was a great film with a great story to support it. All actors involved were brilliant too....!!! Highly recommend this film...
Very powerful. Watch and learnBy chuka (8 reviews) from Reading , 07 Jul 2012It's surprising how much a film with its characters, however fictional, can show a areas of humanity that no-one really knows how they came to be. But this film does it.
If you've heard about Sierra Leone and its war involving the recruitment, brainwashing and abuse of children by turning them into amoral infant soldiers, this is a film that shows you what its really about.
Leo di Caprio, who must be applauded for his acting of late, (Shutter Island and Inception) brings it out again. His accent comes and goes, but its not bad for an American trying to do a Rhodesian accent. He plays the character very well and it's a film I got very drawn into. You certainly feel for them all at the end.
A fantastic fact-based story from a very recent conflict. More like this from all involved, please!
fine actingBy gianino (648 reviews) from London , 07 Jul 2012Leonardo Di Caprio has grown since Titanic; he has grown into a very fine actor and his films of choice are usually fantastic. This is no dissapointment; great cast, great plot and awesome direction and pictures. He is also quite handsome. Jennifer Connelly is brilliant in her role as the american journalist so his Djimon Hounsou who gives also an outstanding performace.
