Universal nabbed Hammer's gore theatrics along with their resident scriptwriter, Jimmy Sangster, in the effort to beat the House of Horror at their own game. The result is enjoyable hokum with, for the era, some edgily gruesome torture chamber scenes. Thespian legend Sir Donald Wolfit goes predictably over the top as Doctor Callistratus, who needs blood to stay alive and uses victims from his insane asylum for the grisly transfusion purpose. Hammer heroine Barbara Shelley adds the glamour, while Victor Maddern wears the daftest make-up imaginable as Carl, the scarred cripple servant of the mad doctor. Serviceable shocks pepper the crisp period atmosphere, neatly laced with an ever-present sense of doom.

    A cracking film

Anyone who has seen this film has one of two opinions. Either they will tell you that it is one of the best manga films they have seen or it is a good film but way to short. At 45 mins this sure is a short film but you know the animation is fantastic the story is as easy to grasp as you want it to be. The action and set pieces are stunning, the sound and picture quality are great. In short this is a perfect rental as it is a fantastic manga that will leave you wanting more. Think of this as an experience rather than a film.

Just About 3 Stars For The Animation

I'm a big fan of anime and when I learnt of this film by the makers of the classic Ghost In The Shell I rushed to get a hold of it. Unfortunately I found a woefully short movie with no plot, no decent dialogue and characters you truly couldn't give a damn about. How people rate this as a classic I'll never know. It does look great but then again it doesn't look THAT great, and honestly I just think it's BLOODY overrated!

    Fantastic animation but short

First of all don't buy this anime if you think it'll have a good story line as it does not give you any background on the charachters or what they're doing, apart from a little girl who's killing vampires! however dont be put off by this as this short film was created mainly to show off what Digital Animation meant for the next generation of anime and is also the begining of a much longer Anime Tv series called Blood+ (around 50+ episodes) in Japan and coming soon to America. It's in this series that the story is developed and we learn what Saya (the little vamp girl) is really up to.

Even without much of a story the film has tons of atmosphere and a beautiful artistic style that left an impression on me which caused a repeat viewing by the next day, which never happens! It is an impressive little feature length which will leave you wanting more and sadly wishing they kept going for another hour or so. All I have to say is watch this dvd and keep an eye out for the series which has a very deep and intriguing story line.

    Extremely over-rated

As a big fan of japanese films and anime I was prepared for a classic. A lot of films of this genre have a lot of plot twists and extensive charaterisation which make them extremely complicated and involved films to watch. This rather short film unfortunately has so little plot that if I were to sumerise it here it would blow the whole film. On the plus side the background artwork and lighting is fantastic and the main character does grab your attention briefly. However overall this film leaves you feeling disappointed in a way anime rarely does. Avoid this unless you are a background lighting specialist for japanese films, in which case this film will actually hold some interest for you.

    Excellent

A very short 45 minutes, but very, very enjoyable. The quality of the graphics, the action and the overall sci-fi story are going make a classic in manga animation.

    To be seen.

    Soooooo Overated It's Not True

DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE. This anime looks nice with some pretty scary vampires but that's as far as it goes. Short with nothing happening apart from a girl killing vampires, no explanations, no background, no characterisation.

I am quite a big fan of anime normally but this film was a big dissapointment, it's far too short and not a lot happens. true the animation is very slick and pretty looking etc but when it comes down to the story theres not a whole lot there, especially anything thats not been done a thousand times before. by all means watch this but its not a keeper.

Blood - Half a Vampire story

Well, what there is of this is great. Where's the other half? Top animation, an interesting setting, and a plot that felt like it was going places, until it all ends abruptly after 45 mins.

    BLOOD.... You'll be wanting more!!

First i have to say... this is the best vamp flick i have EVER seen! the story and animation are really good and keep you tuned in all the way through! seriously.... this will never be beat!!!! from the first splatter of blood upto the final battle, this will keep you watching... Oh wait.... There is one little let down.... its too short! At just over half an hour this is by no means as long as it should be.

It could be this shortness that makes this such a good film...

(It's as if they made a cool film, Took it to the cutting room floor and only kept the pure golden bits!!!)

Move over AKIRA, Anime has a new Golden child! :)

Made by Production IG (Ghost in the Shell) this is superbly animated, very stylish and full of atmosphere from the start. The only drawback is it's 50 minutes running time. I don't know if they ran out of money or time but imagine a film that goes from a great set-piece action intro straight into a drawn-out thrilling finale and misses out all the stuff in-between. It all makes sense and flows from a narrative point of view but with the Hollywood horror films it resembles, we're used to an extra hour of sub-plots, supporting characters and exposition. I'm relatively new to anime but this great little film just made me want to see more.
