Jack Warner rose from the dead to star in TV's Dixon of Dock Green after his character was bumped off by petty crook Dirk Bogarde in this crime classic. Produced by Michael Balcon and scripted by TEB Clarke (a former policeman who penned many an Ealing comedy), the film yet again revealed the influence of the documentary on postwar British cinema, with its realistic depiction of the austere times that pushed some people into crime. Jimmy Hanley is a touch lightweight as Warner's police colleague who brings Bogarde to book, but the rest of director Basil Dearden's cast are outstanding.
The Blue Lamp is classic old-fashioned British entertainment and is still highly enjoyable if you don't mind the idealised portrayal of the police. Good location footage of the streets of west London and the long-demolished White City stadium too.
The Nanny has Bette Davis in the title role. She is hated by her young charge who insists that she wants to kill him. However, he's been in a psychiatric hospital for the last couple of years following the death of his younger sister so who should mummy (Wendy Craig) believe? Effectively atmospheric and Bette underplays her role nicely for a change.
