Steelly
By Nicholas Vangelis from London , 13 Feb 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
Blue Steel portrays a serial killer with a gun fetish (think Taxi Driver)killing randomly in New York. Hunting the killer is a rookie female cop, who has become the object of his affection after saving him in a supermarket shoot out.
Kathryn Bigelow employs the same kind of slick cinematography we are used to from Point Break, Strange Days, Near Dark etc, but the plot moves in fits and bursts and never seems to up the ante enough. When the killer escapes for the fourth time from a shoot out things start to get a little dull. But Bigelow does manages to keep the action going throughout the film - just.
Since the focus is on the cop and not the psycho, the killer is rather crudely drawn (nothing as in depth as Travis Bickle) but this is forgivable since he is not the central figure of the film. There are some great tense moments and set peices in there, the acting is excellent, and all the elements fit together well... it just feels like the film's structure needed to be refined down some more, so it builds to a climax properly. This film is like a great looking car with an engine that keeps stalling, but it gets you there eventually. But it would have been more fun if it had been a smooth ride. Still recommended.- Was this review helpful to you?

(13)Enjoyable, suspensful thriller
By a customer , 04 May 2013I really enjoyed this film. I had seen a few negative reviews of it but thought I would still give it a try. I like Kathryn Bigelow's films, and I think Jamie Lee Curtis is a really good actress and again I enjoy most of her films. This has a really good storyline, and is suspenseful. Ron Silver is exceptionally creepy in his role as Eugene, and I think this will appeal to most people who like a good thriller. Some parts of the film may lack in belief a little bit, but in all a good thriller that is well worth watching.- Was this review helpful to you?
