    [Highly rated reviewer]

Blue Valentine is the film that has taken Derek Cianfrance over 10 years to write, direct and realise. Drawing from his own personal experiences of relationships, this film raises the question of how life together can turn sour over time from what starts as innocent but promising. Revealing accounts of two days in the married life of Dean (Ryan Gosling) and Cindy (Michelle Williams) in the past to the awkward present. With a loose narrative, (a large portion of the film consists of improvised scenes) complete with arguably two of the most influential actors of our generation, Blue Valentine promises to be anything but predictable. The film paints the struggles and efforts of a family that seems to be disappearing into thin air, almost as spontaneously as it all began. Cianfrance is able to capture a rare reality, drawing from his documentary filmmaking background, that reflects the organic complexity of male and female relations as well as portraying everybody's quiet worry: Is there a sell-by date on relationships? However, the real strength of the film is the varying answers that are offered due to the ambiguous, but hardly pretentious ending: Is it Dean or Cindy to blame for the cracks appearing in their family? Or simply two bad days out of several years spent together that reflect an overall prediction for their future because, after all, is life is more than the sum of its parts? Receiving 2 Golden Globe nominations, Blue Valentine goes the extra mile to capture the honest truth of relationships.

very beautiful and realistic love story which is the opposite of a rom/com but so romantic and heartfelt ,the two leads are incredible but we do not expect less from Gosling & Williams

  • Worth a watch

This is a bit of a weird one. I enjoyed it, although I don't think 'enjoyed' is quite the word, but I'm struggling to find another. This isn't a happy film. And it isn't a sad, weepy film either. It's just a film. Here we have these two people who rushed in to a relationship and weren't right for each other; it's very ordinary. That's not necessarily a criticism it's just that this film is almost like overhearing your neighbours arguing. It's very real and subtle and not like your usual end-of-love films. I think the fact that this film is very, for lack of a better phrase, true to life is why it's hard to describe how I feel about it. It didn't really elicit and emotional response from me in the way films usually do, I think because it's hard to find escapism in its realism. However, Gosling and Williams both play their parts well and I would say it is definitely worth a watch.

I think it is one of the few love Hollywood movies that reflect true life. Ryan is absolutely amazing (in my opinion), as usual... Five stars to the director for this fabulous film!

I was disappointed. Firstly, I don't even understand the title. Secondly, this movie has no end. This man sacrifices so much for this woman and she is totally ungrateful, treating him like dirt. I felt like I had wasted my time when the movie ended. Avoid!

  • Shatteringly beautiful to watch

A film for adults. The antithesis of Hollywood rom-coms but instead we see the manner in which a beautiful relationship disintegrates without seeming rhyme or reason, Beautiful, intimate, touching and thought-provoking. Acted with true tenderness by Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, who even in the darkest scenes manage to portray the love at the core of this disintegration. What happens? Not a lot. What is shown? Everything. Be prepared to feel like a voyeur in some very personal space.
