    [Highly rated reviewer]

Blue Valentine is the film that has taken Derek Cianfrance over 10 years to write, direct and realise. Drawing from his own personal experiences of relationships, this film raises the question of how life together can turn sour over time from what starts as innocent but promising. Revealing accounts of two days in the married life of Dean (Ryan Gosling) and Cindy (Michelle Williams) in the past to the awkward present. With a loose narrative, (a large portion of the film consists of improvised scenes) complete with arguably two of the most influential actors of our generation, Blue Valentine promises to be anything but predictable. The film paints the struggles and efforts of a family that seems to be disappearing into thin air, almost as spontaneously as it all began. Cianfrance is able to capture a rare reality, drawing from his documentary filmmaking background, that reflects the organic complexity of male and female relations as well as portraying everybody's quiet worry: Is there a sell-by date on relationships? However, the real strength of the film is the varying answers that are offered due to the ambiguous, but hardly pretentious ending: Is it Dean or Cindy to blame for the cracks appearing in their family? Or simply two bad days out of several years spent together that reflect an overall prediction for their future because, after all, is life is more than the sum of its parts? Receiving 2 Golden Globe nominations, Blue Valentine goes the extra mile to capture the honest truth of relationships.

Simply: A real gritty take on the heartache of love. Goslings performance is outstanding. The understated dialogue and the rawness captured emulates the reality and struggles of life and love.

This is a dark film filled with angst, pain and tender love. As the film unravels the narrative informs you cracks will appear but what you are watching is a tender new love growing. It is a cinematic illustration of how tender love is and the impact new and cracked love have on our psyche. Images show the innocence, rebellion and recklessness of youth. What we know for sure is that we all wanted to stay with the young free lovers and not move on.

A truly spectacular film. Creative directorship, gritty, real and heartbreaking. Captivates thought and a brilliant take upon love and its trials and tribulations. Wonderfully shot, away for the usual Hollywood glamour. Fantastic soundtrack throughout, a real gem! Now takes place as probably one of my favourite ever films.

  • All you need isn't love.

    Rated - 5.0 stars

This is one of my favourite films. It's a story about love, and how love is sometimes not enough. It shows in great detail how 2 people instinctively and beautifully fall in love, and how it naturally and painfully breaks apart. It's a very believable portrayal of relationships some of you may have experienced: How people change and begin wanting different things; how imperfections become exaggerated over time; how things can become intolerable even though there's still love. It's a heartbreaking movie, and if you want a slow-paced film which concentrates on real emotion you will love this. However, it requires concentration as you'll really need to think about the characters' feelings and situations. If you are wanting to zone-out a little while watching a movie, this is not for you! *Word of advice- you might not want to watch this on a date night!
