  • A Classic

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Still quite enthralling after all these years, "Blue Velvet" is a bold statement of alternative American cinema with nods to the avant garde and his future work "Twin Peaks".

The film started with the idea of a man finding a severed ear in the grass on his way home.

Dennis Hopper plays one of the best cinema bad guys ever and the deranged world that Kyle Maclachlan gets pulled into is a hellish place ruled by drugs, violence and darkness. Luckily he has Laura Dern and Isabella Rossellini to keep him company.

It has its surreal moments but is still conventionally routed, contrasting the seemingly idyllic surface appearance of small town American Life with its dark underworld.

    Essential viewing.

Enjoyable, intense and bizarre. Fans of alternative films will probably already know it back to front, but as an introduction to David Lynch, this one has his stamp all over it. I liked working it all out in my head as it seemed quite metaphorical in places. The contrast of the picket-fences of suburban America against the dark and sometimes violent underworld depicted was an ingenious way of making the film all-the-more disturbing. The transfer to blu-ray is very impressive.

  • If you like David Lynch...

.. you've probably already seen it. If you haven't, you'll love it. If you don't like his stuff, safe to say you won't like this. If you're not bothered either way, and you like films that are well acted, alternative, and don't have your standard a-b-c plot, give it a go. It's dark, a little bit disturbing, and bizarre in places. Certainly not one for a nice night in with the family though.

Not a classic by any stretch of the imagination. A truly awful film from start to finish. If people were enthralled by this film in the 1980s then that says a lot about the film industry at that time. The plot is quite simply daft at best, I will not get the couple of hours running time back, I suggest not to waste your time. A title that quite appropriately is linked with toilet paper.

The diversity of views on this film is quite extraordinary Some even say it is the best fim ever! I am afraid I am in the camp of people who do not get it. It is too long (nearly three hours) and much of the script and acting is poor. There is a lot of violence and sadomassochism and overall the film is just weird and bizarre..
