  • A moral tale

Anyone hoping for a loose reworking of the Perrault fairy tale for the modern age with plenty of nudity, sex and violence will be sorely disappointed. A Catherine Breillat film this may be, but it is faithful to the original story, necessarily expanded to make an 80 minute picture.

So it is a very moral tale, seen through the eyes of an 8 year old modelled on Catherine Breillat herself. Purity and a loving heart bring their ultimate reward, but first we explore the perennial attraction of dangerous men, sisterly rivalry, and the temptation of the forbidden. Given that, it is surprising that it has a UK rating of 15 on the grounds that it contains infrequent gory moments; less so than the original tale and it would be impossible to be true to the original otherwise. Catherine Breillat insists that it is a film for children as well as adults. Any mother wondering whether it would be wise to allow her daughter to watch would find that the requirement for good French or a willingness to read the subtitles is the biggest impediment.

I refer to mothers and daughters here because men only exist in this world as monsters or distant objects of love. Males wondering whether to watch this may pass on to other Breillat films of more obvious attraction, and since it is a fairy tale it would be pointless to complain about lack of historical realism or plot weaknesses. It is cinema and we should approach it as such.

  • Ultimately dissapointing

Had a lot of promise, was visually stunning in parts, but ultimately disappointing. The ending was pointless and didn't contribute towards the story.

  • Huge disappointment

I can't even begin to describe this film. It was like a low budget home made movie. Acting was terrible and made me feel physically ill, costumes looked like rags made by a blind seamstress and the set was poor. Do not rent.

  • A story told very badly creepy

Terrible, if the acting is not the worst part then the sheer creepiness of the film has to be. A story told incredibly badly and left me ffeling as if I had watched something wrong

  • The story's the key

Everything about this film is low budget and simple, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It was good to see a film that simply tells a story, rather than being crammed with special effects and glossy scenery. It is rather slow and not a great deal happens, but it does have a certain naive charm that keeps you watching. Check out the overused section of spiral staircase!

  • Great fairytale (but maybe not for kids)

    Rated - 3.5 stars

Kudos for absolutely beautiful images. Despite it being a children's fairytale it kept me absorbed all the way through.

I did choose to not show my kids this though, they watched the trailer and thought it looked scary. After seeing it it thought the older one would probably have managed but it is not a film for young ones.
