What a year for Tim Robbins. In 1992, not only did he star in Robert Altman's savage Hollywood satire The Player, but he also starred in, wrote and directed this hilarious pseudo-documentary about a folk-singing, right-wing politician running for the US Senate. Taking its style from This Is Spinal Tap, with a deliberate on-screen homage to the Bob Dylan tour movie Don't Look Back, Bob Roberts is both witty and wickedly pointed, if a shade smug at times. Immaculately cast, with telling performances from Alan Rickman, Gore Vidal and John Cusack, the film was a notable and substantial achievement for its young auteur, who went on to become one of the movie names of the 1990s. Incidentally, Bob Roberts was, amazingly, produced by the American office of enterprising British company Working Title.
Clever satire on politics, done as a documentary film, that has the message that it is appearance and the manipulation of the media that counts, not reality.
A superb satirical look at US politics with seductive and convincing performances from an excellent cast. How easy it is to convince people of horrendous ideas of bigotry, fear, greed and hatred, if they are wrapped up in a star spangled folksy parcel. This is a truly scary but compelling piece of cinema. Ironically it is a left wing political activist (Robbins), who epitomises in Roberts everything he despises, which makes this film an entertaining warning to everyone. Wake up and smell the napalm.
This is not my usual kind of film and I wasn't expecting much from it to be honest but I actually really enjoyed it. Not the kind of film you want to watch again but makes a nice change from the usual sunday night rom-com
Tim Robbins is in line to direct a new film version of George Orwell's classic novel 1984. The Shawshank Redemption and War Of The Worlds star, who has also directed the films Bob Roberts and Dead Man Walking, has told Empire that he wants to bring a stage version of the novel, which he is directing, to the big screen. Robbins told the magazine: "I've got a screenplay of it and now I'm starting the process of trying to put it together." Orwell's tale of a totalitarian future first hit Read more
