With this erotic thriller, director Uli Edel (Last Exit to Brooklyn) attempted to out-steam the same year's Basic Instinct, but, although it makes for rather hokey fun, it lacks the outrageous flair of Paul Verhoeven's notorious hit. Madonna stars as the femme fatale accused of killing her elderly millionaire boyfriend; Willem Dafoe plays the lawyer who gets seduced into a dangerous affair with his client. The story is absolute rot, of course, and it's more interesting to guess how much of the erotic footage survived the snip. Madonna proves adept at shedding her clothes and handling candle wax, while Dafoe goes through the film largely on autopilot. However, the distinguished supporting cast — Joe Mantegna, Julianne Moore, Anne Archer, Jürgen Prochnow and Frank Langella — adds some much needed class to the proceedings.

  • Almost silly enough to be enjoyable, in its calculated mix of kinky sex and courtroom scenes, but finally it is just too silly for words.

    Stick with me on this.....

There seems to be some criticism of Madonna's performance, and that she didn't seem to be enjoying herself, but I think that's deliberate, as she's supposed to be playing an ice-cold Nazi bitch goddess, and aloofness goes with the job description. That said, I'll accept that she is a bobbins actress.

I have an issue with the central theme of this movie. Whether Madonna's character is guilty of the crime of which she is accused is irrelevant, as the film doesn't judge her for that, it judges her character for being a very attractive young woman who has sex with whomever and however she likes, and it invites us to do likewise (judge her I mean). The film punishes her for this sexual liberation by being raped, amongst other things (I don't think it's too much of a spoiler to state that she meets an even worse fate at the end). I think we are supposed to sympathise with the character played by Willem Dafoe, but I thought he was just a monumentally ungrateful, adulterous pringle. I'm no feminist, but I think rather than vilifying beautiful, sexually liberated women (and making films vilifying them), we should be writing songs about them, building statues of them, maybe having a national holiday named in their honour.

It is not difficult to imagine that this strange attitude to women and sex is how witch burnings started, that if a good looking woman refused to sleep with you, you simply brand her a witch (or a lesbian). But that's just my pet theory.

Apparently a number of people criticised this film for having, and I quote, 'too much sex'. Man, is MY finger not on the pulse! Presumably those people watched this film for the courtroom repartee. If it was down to me, this film would be nothing but Madonna wandering around in the buff for an hour and a half. Maybe with Julianne Moore popping round halfway through, wearing a light summer frock that has been rained on and gone all see-through, and going 'oh look Madge, I'm all wet, I'll have to go and strip off very slowly in a big room full of mirrors'. Clearly I'm in the minority.
