Michael Cristofer can finally shed the tag of Bonfire of the Vanities screenwriter, for he has followed up his impressive TV movie, Gia, with this debate-sparking study of twentysomething morality. It looks like we've a long night ahead of us as eight near-identical Los Angelenos go through their pre-club rituals. However, when wannabe actress Tara Reid accuses pro-footballer Jerry O'Connell of date rape, the fun stops and sides are taken. Snappily shot in hip image bites by Rodrigo Garcia and astutely structured by writer David McKenna (American History X), this breaks no new ground but still manages to tease, amuse and provoke.
A drama of casual coupling, centred around the accusation of rape from one participant; what begins as comedy ends as a more earnest investigation of varying sexual attitudes, but it never strikes the right note in either part.
