A short[ish] film about horrible people
By Rehan (127 reviews) from London , 19 Apr 2006[Highly rated reviewer]
First things first: the dubbing on this film is dreadful, so you'll spend most of your time watching people speaking out of synch.
But apart from that, this is a film which is even-handed: it's an exposé of all that's shallow and ghastly about both Western and Indian cultures.
You have the rapacious, patronising yet needy Western woman (played by Felicity Kendal's sister) contrasted with a serious, aspirational and deluded writer and a handsome and spectacularly shallow film star.
No-one comes out well here, and all-in-all it's moderately insightful but more depressing. Despite all good intentions, it's one for the c-list of films to watch.- Was this review helpful to you?

BRAVE ATTEMPT
By a customer from Lancashire , 05 Sep 2004Made in 1970 before Bollywood became vogue in the West. It's a brave attempt on the part of Ismail Merchant to bring the world of the most prolific film industry to the screen. It's worth watching as are his other productions set in India.- Was this review helpful to you?

Looks fabulous, has a ...
By Chancery#1 from STROMNESS , 18 Nov 2003Looks fabulous, has a terrific soundtrack and is astoundingly modern. BUT the heroine is so irritating you could gladly wish the whole thing at the bottom of the sea at times. It might have been less artistically 'significant' if she had been more loveable, but you can't help wishing they'd given her a personality makeover and made the film more watchable. Recommended nevertheless for the sheer beauty of it!- Was this review helpful to you?
