A charming shaggy tale of one man and his dog and his dreams
Juan 'Coco' Villegas has recently lost his job as a garage mechanic and is looking for a new job while scraping a living trying to sell beautiful handmade knives and living with his daughter and her family. He helps a woman whose car has broken down and is persuaded to adopt a pedigree Argentinian dog - Bomb?n - by way of thanks. Owning Bomb?n catapults him into a new world, and awakens the dreamer in him. Accompanying him into this new world of dog ownership is Walter, a rather large and enthusiastic dog trainer and 'expert'.
I have heard that the cast are not all trained actors and the credits seem to bear that out as the main leads seem to be playing themselves. Juan Villegas is wonderful, his slightly amused, slightly worried expression barely changes throughout the film but somehow this makes it all the funnier. Walter Donado is wonderful too, his loud, slightly sleazy but good natured dog trainer is the perfect foil for the quiet Coco. The rest of the cast are great too, but the real star amongst them is the slobbering, ugly Bomb?n.
The cinematography is lovely, showing how windy and desolate the Patagonian landscapes are but never making it look depressing or barren.
What makes this film special is the humour it finds in unlikely situations, some of them almost tragic. The film doesn't shy away from the economic and social problems faced by Argentinians but manages to find hope amongst them all. A funny, though-provoking and hugely likeable film.
This is not a movie for those lovers of action packed, CGI filled, Hollywood blockbusters.
It is a simple story of a man, Coco, thrown out of work and stripped of his self respect in his early fifties. (Maybe some of us can relate to that?) His fortunes and whole life changes when he acquires Bombon, a large white hunting dog.
The main characters, Juan 'Coco' Villegas and Walter Donado (the dog trainer), are not trained actors. However they give a great performance in this heart-warming story that doesn't get over-sentimental. (Hollywood, take note!)
Oh, and finally don't forget to watch the DVD 'extras' to learn more about the actors, location and Director.
