Enjoyable enough post-apocalyptic adventure
By VIDEOMONSTER (252 reviews) from Glasgow , 19 Jan 2010[Highly rated reviewer]
This was an enjoyable enough post-apocalypse movie in the style of Mad Max 3. The acting is decent, the cinematography is suitably grim, and the plot is suitably standard. Washington's titular character has the last bible, they were all of them burned after the apocalypse happened. Gary Oldman's Carnegie wants it to control the masses. So the chase begins. The actions scenes are a joy to watch as they become even more outlandish, Washington kicks butt like never before. There are also nice touches which need to be seen to be believed. The ending is surprisingly uplifting as Eli succeeds in his mission. Drawbacks would be that it is plain bible bashing at its finest and some underwritten characters. None the less an enjoyable movie, probably wait to rent it on DVD rather than see it on the big screen.- Was this review helpful to you?

Futuristic tale worth watching
By jts (4 reviews) , 27 May 2013Brilliant post apocalyptic film. Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman in fine form. Not an all action film but a good story line well directed. Frances de la Tour as a tea serving canibal -- bit weird.- Was this review helpful to you?

Great film
By kahlan (9 reviews) , 06 Mar 2013I enjoyed this film from start to finish. The story was well written and script was great. Not and action packed film but had enough to keep up the entertainment value. Not fast paced as there is a detailed story that needs to be followed, good for a quiet night in with friends, partner or on your own.- Was this review helpful to you?

Much like its subject matter, it is flawed but has virtues
By DanElford (19 reviews) , 18 Feb 2013[Highly rated reviewer]
It is a flawed screenplay that performs a frustrating side-step of certain issues, about which I cannot be detailed without spoiling the film, and it featured an under-developed first half, but the Hughes' great visual flair, sound and music, fantastic performances, and an impressively poetic use of metaphor for the righteous vs. the corrupt, make 'The Book of Eli' a film worth watching.- Was this review helpful to you?
