Robert De Niro appeared in more than ten movies before his real breakthrough parts in Mean Streets and The Godfather Part II. One of his early films, directed by Czech émigré Ivan Passer, this deals lightly with the New York drug scene. George Segal is the shaggy-haired ex-crimper who needs $100 a day to pay for his heroin habit, but can't even seem to rob a diner successfully. I'm a big fan of the old de'niro and so was quite pleased when i found one of his old movies that i hadn't seen. Unfortunately, he only has a small role in this really quite poor film.
If your a big enough de'niro fan and you have nothing better to do, then its worth getting just to glimpse a young de'niro before he was famous. Even in this small role he had only memorable presence in the film.
As for the film itself, it settles around the story of a criminal attempting to go straight for his new found love, but being oppressed by crooked cops and other bad guys. There are moments where this film does make you feel emotion for the lead but most of the time your waiting for the ending
This is an excellent movie.
George Seagal is a true natural at playing a down and out junkie. This film was amusing, very smart and indeed very moving at times. Although you don't see too much of Mr De Niro his acting abilities are very much felt in this movie.
Well worth the viewing.
