  • Amusing film version of the stage comedy.

Judy Holliday was well worth sticking with to reprise her Broadway role in this film version of the play. It would have been more compelling perhaps for the producers to go for a bigger screen star, but they made the right choice with Ms Holliday, who I think won an Oscar for her excellent performance. In former times, I suppose Jean Harlow or even Mae West might have been considered for the role----and in later times perhaps even Marilyn. But Judy Holliday is remembered, quite rightly , for her performance here. She is excellently supported by Broderick Crawford, in a rare leading role for him; and by a young William Holden starting out on his illustrious career. It is often difficult for sucessful plays to translate smoothly into movies, especially when the big screen cries out for lots of sets and shift in location scenes. But a good story is a good story and this film overcomes the constraints of emerging from a play and goes on to make for good cinematic entertainment. A bit above average and worth a watch.

This film was a further step in my current project to watch all the extant Cukor films. Given the rest of the Cukor output, this is not one of his best. On the other hand, this is to compare it to the likes of A Star is Born, A Woman's Face, etc. Compared to the more usual film fare, it is a stylish well-made light comedy. William Holden, well able to hog the attention when he wants, seems to take a downbeat approach here, content to surrender the spotlight to Judy Holliday and Broderick Crawford. As the film was made in 1950, I was looking for the cold war, McCarthy echoes, but they are not there. It's more of a Frank Capra film, and Garson Kasin, who wrote the 1946 play on which the film is based was also strongly associated with Capra. I notice the film was remade in 1993, with John Goodman in the Crawford role. I must get that in and compare.

this is the original ... a really good comedy. Judy Holliday is brilliant in the role of 'the dumb blonde' in this classic film. A must see. Never mind the re-make of this film there's no comparison.

I have seen this wondeful film many times over the years - and it still entertains and enthralls! Judy Holliday was amazing.
