A Decent Start For Anderson
By David Levy from Totteridge, London , 20 Apr 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
If you were ever wondering where the genius of Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums' Wes Anderson started, the answer can be found here, in 'Bottle Rocket'.
Like so many other low budget, first time movies, (Swingers is a prime example) a simple storyline is merely a platform for clever dialogue and identifiable, rich characters. The two leads, played by Owen and Luke Wilson, seem to be having a blast throughout, and this reflects on the film as a whole.
Unfortunately, the simple 'buddy heist' storyline doesn't live up to the promise, and in the end, the movie can only be recommended as a curio, and no better.- Was this review helpful to you?

(77)A joyous leap into films
By a customer , 24 May 2013Fan of Anderson that I am, for some strange reason I have only now watched this nearly 20 years' old debut. It was worth the wait. Occasionally (and understandably) a little flawed (who am I to say that????), the positives completely outweigh these supposed flaws! Crisp, literate, funny dialogue, characters at once sad yet completely lovable, and Anderson's perfect eye for pathos-in-farce, and even a sweet love sub-plot. The tone is closest to 'The Life Aquatic...' than any of his other films. Very Good!!!- Was this review helpful to you?

Not recommended
By Eastbourne (17 reviews) , 16 Dec 2012A directors first film can sometimes be fresh and push a boundary further. Unfortunately this is not one of them - so if you rent this be prepared to see slow pace, ponderous dialogue and situations. Not recommended- Was this review helpful to you?

Bottle Rocket
By Ell1981 (169 reviews) from London , 22 Oct 2010Always good to see a directors 1st work especially one that has kept the same disciplines and often cast for every film he's made since. I don't like all his films but the humour he reveals so subtley makes them all worth watching.- Was this review helpful to you?

Should win you over
By RJNeb2 (924 reviews) from London , 19 Jan 2010A little rough around the edges but Wes Anderson's first film is a very good indication of some real talent. Although the plot fizzles into a rather lame heist scenario (with Owen Wilson as a particularly inept robber), the throwaway dialogue and affable performances by the two Wilson brothers give it a goofy, quirky charm that's hard to resist.- Was this review helpful to you?

Amiable comedy
By jesuskenevil (245 reviews) from Bruton , 13 Jan 2010A gentle heist/comedy/buddy movie that never gets out of first gear but, hay, whos rushing?
Deftly handled performances all round, quirky story line and a genuinely affecting love story made this a very enjoyable 90 mins.
Keep your expectation down and you wont be disappointed.- Was this review helpful to you?
