Michael Moore is a brave man ? he worries about what a lot of us worry about, but actually has the courage to write or make films about it all. This is an extremely effective, if not rambling film that asks the question `Is America a nation of gun nuts, or are they just nuts?' Director Michael Moore uses the massacre at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado as a jumping off point, then takes us on a journey that includes stops in Michigan, where it seems everyone owns a gun, a sit-in at K-Mart's corporate headquarters and an amusing side trip to Moore's idealized Canada.

The movie is all over the place, and offers very few answers to the questions it raises, but I think it was Moore's strategy to present the facts and figures and get people thinking for themselves. Moore's everyman appearance is put to good use in the film's most effective scene. He talks his way into gun-nut Charlton Heston's Hollywood hills home for an interview, claiming to be a member of the NRA. Once inside he gradually warms Heston up before asking the hard questions about the consequences of living in a heavily armed society. Heston stiffens, ends the interview and walks away. Moore's camera follows him as he shuffles down a long hall. The Grand Wizard of the NRA is revealed for what he is, an old man, not the Moses of the gun movement. It's impressive footage that caps a film full of powerful images and ideas.

  • Fight The Power...

Positives and negatives...on the plus side, Moore brings up important issues that get us thinking...or well, thinking more about them (since I imagine quite a lot of us already have some idea of the issues) and he presents it in an easily-digestible format that is easy to watch and is both hilarious and cringeworthy in equal parts (cringeworthy mainly for some of the people he interviews)...my only complaints with him are that whilst you watch it, you can't help but feel there is an over-bias of everything...facts are very selective and his ideals permeate into everything...now, I understand it's hard to not let some of your personality show when you produce a documentary but for me, I'd be more inclined to take him seriously if he presented more of both sides of the argument...kinda crosses the line from being a documentary to being propaganda...oh, and he's also a bit smug...scratch that, very smug...

Guns, guns, guns. Americans must be mad to allow what is shown in this film. I would be scared to death to live in a society that allows such widespread gun ownership.

An all-round cleverly shot and thought out film, aimed at a debate which has most likely largely affected America since its birth: gun culture and control.

I love the way Moore plucks up the courage to talk to (and sometimes point the finger) both key figures in the debate and the average joe of the street. His documentary skills and arguments are really well put together to.

Unfortunately I think some of its facts and statistics are a little out of date, but that cannot be helped since it is 10 years old. The only other downside I found to this film is (and that of most of Moore's films) they do tend to sidetrack from time to time, instead of staying with the original argument.

Do not let this put you off though, as it is a thought provoking and eye-opening piece of work!

Thought provoking, uncomfortable in places but ultimately doesn't answer any questions. Michael Moore likes to ask a lot of questions but doesn't seem to want to hear any answers
