A stylish version of the book
By ThomasKus (147 reviews) from Gloucester , 03 Jun 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
Unlike many other Dracula films Francis Ford Coppola has gone back to the book to produce a film that is is both atmosperic and stylish. Gary Oldman is superb as Dracula and Anthony Hopkins gives another fine performance as Abraham van Helsing. There is also a notable side role for Tom Waits as Renfield. I am less sure about the choice of Keanu Reeves as Jonathan Harker who is lacking some depth in his performance.
This film draws heavily on the book as well as the unmissable 1927 silent classic 'Nosferatu - Eine Symphonie des Grauens' by F.W. Murnau. Some modernistic props and costumes are used as well as a number of gory visual effects but the film remains very enjoyable and satisfying throughout. One of its strength is the almost lovable despair portrayed by Gary Oldman that connects the tragic background story of Dracula with his fate of being 'undead'. there is also a strong erotic undercurrent that is well handled by Coppola as a driving force for the story rather than self-satisfying voyerism.
The DVD has some notable extras including a rather good 'making off' featurette and an almost historic trailer for 'DVDs as the future of home video'.
Overall a treat for a good night out.- Was this review helpful to you?

Dracula adaption
By GofWarks (60 reviews) from Radford Semele , 16 Sep 2012It was a good adaption of the book (reading it at the moment). When it first appeared I found the cinematography really impressive. Seems a bit dated now.- Was this review helpful to you?

Doesn't let down the book
By rachaelknight16 (108 reviews) from Derbyshire, England , 29 May 2012I finished the book this morning and wanted to wait before I saw this film - I'm glad I did! Overall it keeps to the story well & doesn't drift too much (although Lucy is made out to be raunchy who puts herself around, which I didn't get from the book)
The acting is all brilliant, especially Oldman. Reeves' English accent isn't as bad as what I expected, although at the start I found myself concentrating more on that than what he was actually saying! Mina is also different towards the end - I'll let you decide which direction you prefer!
Different to Nosferatu in that this really follows the book's story from start to finish. From when Harker first gets to Dracula's castle & the brides, to Lucy slowly deteriorating, Mina's transcripts, the train ride, the horses, to all the men finding Dracula with the gypsies at the end.
You learn more about how Dracula came about to be a vampire - I'm not sure if this adds or detracts from the film. Dracula in Nosferatu is scary as all you see is a cold, heartless vampire, but with this film you see another side to him which makes him more human & likeable. I don't think this is how Dracula should be - saying that, it's a really entertaining film which holds your concentration!- Was this review helpful to you?

A pretty decent adaptation...
By Duke_Boxer (3 reviews) , 26 Apr 2012As good as the book is. There is a lot of pro-Christian, love conquers all, waffle in there to boot. This film tries to filter some of that out and does a good job. By the end of the book you find yourself almost siding with Dracula against the religious fanatics that seek to destroy him. The film also manages to capture that.
All in all it's well worth a watch and yes, you will have to see past Keanu's terrible English accent. But tis' a rare film that has it all.
Some die hard goths will probably find it all far too colourful and not nearly enough doom and gloom.
But the book isn't like that...- Was this review helpful to you?
