  • Humorous and satirical take on Australian perceptions of Aborigines

    [Highly rated reviewer]

A real gem: great acting and a script that touches on many ill informed views of Australian Aborigines, with songs to jolly along the satire. There are some very perceptive gags that I can't repeat because they'd be a spoiler. I can say though, that this film is far more than superficial, existential, s**t!

Don't expect a slick Hollywood production, a Bollywood musical or a British gritty drama. You're getting an indigenous take on many aspects of 1960s (and some 2010s) views with some tappy songs, C&W and gospel. Look out for the Aboriginal group doing Zorba the Greek (unfortunately their scene is not long enough!) and a groovy version of Stand By Your Man. Some pleasing scenery shots that were not digitally enhanced! (Shame on Baz Luhrmann).

We managed to watch almost an hour of this painful caricature of a musical before giving up. It reminded us of the worst excesses of children's television.

We hoped for an entertaining film starring indigenous Australians; alas this was not entertaining so much as embarrassing.

Can't imagine who would enjoy Bran Nue Dae - we didn't.

From what could have been an interesting Ozzie film we got just a predictable romp through a predictable passage of travlel and scenery across Western Australia. Rush gave a fair performance except for his odd South African accent. The singing was tacky and manic. Sorry
